Michigan Artist & Crafter Hello! Thank you for visiting my page! of Brighton, MI. After giving it a try, I was hooked!

Kaleidoscope Fabrics Marbling & Crafts, LLC (Kaleidoscope FMC for short) is a small home-based arts and craft studio created by me: Tania K. I make unique, handcrafted silk scarves from my home studio where traditional Ebru marbling techniques meet modern design sensibilities to create beautiful and inspiring works of wearable art. I am a homemaker and crafter who stumbled on the Turkish Ebru wate

Summer break is over. School is back in session and with that comes the hint of fall with cooler crisp early mornings. This means, it’s comfy sweatshirts and scarves season! My favorite time of year!

New for this season’s fall craft shows are cotton buttery soft scarves with fringe! Each one is permanently hand-dyed & measures approximately 27” x 75.” I love the look and feel of these scarves! Made this scarf with my Alma Mater in mind.

I hope everyone had a great summer! Have a fabulous day!

First craft show of the season is on November 23rd for the Plymouth Canton Music Boosters Fall Craft Show.

My comparison of watch bands from two POD platforms. I uploaded my art to two sites & built the designs from scratch on each one which explains the slight differences in the patterns between the two watch bands. But the most noticeable differences between the two are the print qualities. I suspect it’s because the bands are made of different materials. One (Printify) is a polyester faux leather and the other (Zazzle) is a microfiber faux leather.

Had a little fun designing and ordering printable items with my water marbling patterns. I handmade the necklace pendant using a cut from a sample swatch of fabric.

I’m excited to see what other fun designs I can put together with my other paintings! Maybe one or two items from my collection will make it to the craft shows this fall and winter season. Cost is the big drawback and so I am searching for items that are affordable to stock. Time will soon tell.

Happy Monday! This week’s water marbling practice is a fun one. Thanks for the suggestion, Jennifer W.!

This week’s marbling practice is a fun one, in more ways that one. Painting on water with paints that don’t play nice is always a challenge. You get surprises at every turn. But, I had fun! Enjoy!

Happy Monday! Here’s a fun glimpse into my surface pattern designing process. After making my water marbled design, I print it to paper in the marbling tray. After the print is dried, I take a picture of it and move that to the computer for cleanup and editing. It’s fun to see the finished design on products.

Water marbling outside! Presents challenges though. Better to keep it indoors.

Practicing flowers is most fun and relaxing for me. Here’s my attempt at putting together a video to show the process. I don’t have the ideal camera equipment and setup so please keep that under consideration when my arm gets in the way in the end. Whoops! Haha! Enjoy!

Happy Monday, everyone! How are you all doing? It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve been extremely busy creating and am excited to announce that we have been jury selected into the fall show for Plymouth Canton Music Boosters! The show is on November 23rd. More details will be shared when we get closer to the date.

On another note, I have been hard at work with turning my Ebru paintings into digital patterns for printing. I’m leaning towards offering digital file downloads. Here’s some examples of what the designs can be used for. What do you think? I’ve placed orders for some really fun products and I cannot wait to see how these turn out in person!

I hope everyone is doing well! Have a great week!

Happy Thursday! How have you all been? Last week was my child’s school spring break and we took her on a road trip to Boston and Salem. It was such a fun vacation filled with historical highlights.

This week, I have been experimenting with bandana scarves. Fun, fun! This technique is one that involves dyes, stencils and decolourant. I think it turned out really neat!

I also received an acceptance into the Berrien Artists Guild Box Factory For the Arts juried Makers Market event which is being held on Saturday, November 30, 2024 from 8am-5pm. 1101 Broad St, in St. Joseph, MI. Mark your calendars! 😀

I hope you are all doing well. Here’s my latest scarf creation. This one is on a 12mm satin silk bandana with hand-rolled edges. I love how it turned out! What do you think?

Have a great day and remainder of the week, everyone!

Hi, everyone! How was your day? I had fun today experimenting with water marbling book edges. There’s need for improvement, but it was a fun craft project.

What happens when you melt ice sprinkled with dyes over a silk scarf? You get a beautiful and unique marbled effect.

Happy Sunday! How is everyone doing? Yesterday, I saw the forecast for today and decided it’s going to be perfect spring scarf wearing weather here in the mitten. To pair with my hand-dyed silk scarf, I decided yesterday to make a linen poncho top. Took me roughly 3 hours to design and sew. I love how it turned out & am excited to wear it! What fun crafts have you been up to?

Fun with crafting continues. For this piece, I used a water marbled silk square bandana scarf that was cut to fit the size of the glass insert for the metal tray. I adhered the scarf to the back of the glass, turning into a reversible piece. One side can display the original decorative pattern & when flipped over, the other side will display the water marbled fabric. Underneath the tray sits a water marbled silk scarf table runner.

Hello! How is everyone? I’ve been enjoying my clean home and this downtime from water marbling scarves. During this break, I discovered another fun craft called fore-edge painting and decided to give it a try!

This was a fun art project. I freehand painted the fore-edge. Next time, I might try sketching the characters first. The book I used is the one from my previous post. It has two stories in it. The first story was my favorite of the two and so I used my interpretation of characters and scenery for the mural art. I had more fun with simply painting this on the fly instead of sketching it out.

If you are interested in trying your hand at fore-edge painting, my novice instructions are below. If you love it enough, you may want to explore more deeply into learning how the pros do it.

1) Make a book press.

I used scrap wood from one of my local hardware stores. These were already conveniently cut to size. Drill holes into the boards to insert long carriage bolts. Sandwich a book between the boards and tighten down with washers and wing nuts.

2) Paint using watercolor paints

3) When dried, crack open the pages by gently fanning them out with your fingers- like you would fan a deck of playing cards. Stuck together pages can also be gently separated by carefully sliding a bone folder or similar style tool in between the pages.

Have fun!

Happy MLK day! How is your 2024? My kiddos just wrapped up their first week back to school after their long winter holiday break. I have been easing myself back to the grind as well. I spent my week working alongside my bookkeeper to help her get the year’s taxes in order for next month’s state sales tax filing. Not fun like crafting, but a necessary task. The marketplaces reports have caused quite a bit of confusion and headaches for the bookkeeper (& myself!). With the headaches experienced between Etsy & Goimagine, I have decided to make it easier on myself and downsize on my marketplaces. I am assessing which one,if not all, to eliminate. I’m leaning towards stepping aside from both and simplifying by offering Square sales links on a request basis since I use Square to conduct sales transactions at craft shows. I will update my FB page when I finalize my decision.

Last year was spent testing the water with selling scarves at craft shows. I learned that the scarves are not the best fit for craft shows, and so I will be selective in my applications for 2024. As of now, I am paid up for the Michigan Maker’s December 14, 2024 show at the Suburban Collection Showplace from 11am-5pm. The rest of the year is still up in the air.

On a fun note, winter has finally decided to arrive at our front door steps. We had a decent snowfall over the weekend that resulted in beautiful scenic views, but brought with it below freezing temps.

Yesterday, the bitter cold that swept over our area made for a great day to just cozy up on the couch and read- a luxury I had not been able to do in years! I am enjoying this easy read fiction book and will take today to finish it because it’s another chilly day. What have you been doing to combat the winter chill?

Happy Wednesday! How was everyone’s Christmas Holiday? We had a nice, but busy one with traveling to spend it with family this year. Now that we are back home in Michigan and gifts have been given, I can share my sewing craft that I spent days making.

It was inspired by my recent upper respiratory virus that I fell ill from while working this winter’s craft show season. I spent many days sipping warm drinks to soothe my sore throat, and while carrying a hot to the touch coffee mug around my house and into rooms without coasters, the idea came to me: a coffee cup cozy for my hands with an attached coaster for the bottom of the coffee mug! So I put on my inventors cap and innovated one. I loved it so much and thought that it turned out rather cute as practical use gifts!

One year I made the family microwaveable bowl hot pad coasters and decided to make this year’s sewing craft another practical use gift and introduced everyone to my invention: the ‘Coazty’ - a name I coined after shipping a coaster with a cozy. 😄 Some I made with snaps that supposedly can sustain short times in the microwave, making them okay to use for reheating drinks in the microwave. Others are made with Velcro closures for a more secure fit around different sized mugs. I don’t think Velcro is microwaveable so I wouldn’t recommend the microwave for those.

What do you all think?

One gift recipient said they could see these as a better use if I re designed them to fit around the paws of dogs to make dog booties. The idea seems interesting, but I have yet to know a dog who enjoys having things strapped to their paws. 🤭 BUT…maybe I could see baby booties made out of my pattern! 🤔

12/23/2023

Merry Christmas weekend to all who celebrate the holiday! Are you all feeling prepared? I am not! Today will be my last day of crafting last minute gifts and last minute shopping. Eeek! The days are going by in a flash and before I get too caught up in the frenzy of the holiday, I want to wish you all a safe and happy holiday!

Happy Monday! How was everyone’s weekend? Yesterday, the natural lighting in the house did not make for ideal for photography. So I took advantage and cleaned up the marbling studio (aka, the dining room).

I tossed the Pointsettia shawl that I hand painted with the serti silk dyes technique onto the table and I love how it looks! Today, I will close the center seam to fully join both scarves together and use it as a large scarf and/or table holiday decoration. What do you think?

12/17/2023

Saw this posted somewhere and found it comically funny as this is how it looks here on this gray morning. Not starting off with adequate natural lighting in the house yet to photograph the collection for goimagine or Etsy. Welcome to the Michigan life, folks. 😄

There’s still time to come on out and shop some scarves! 😬 We are here until 5pm.
