Did you know that approximately 47% of Americans suffer from varying degrees of gum disease? Your gums are just as important as teeth when it comes to your overall health, so don’t overlook them. We are here to help you learn more about your gums and to help you prevent or fight gum disease!
What is gum disease?
At its mildest, gum disease first shows up as gum inflammation (bleeding, swelling, redness or pain) and is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by bacterial infection- left untreated, this can progress to periodontitis, which means the infection has progressed to the bone that supports your teeth. This causes bone loss, which in turn leads to reduced support for your teeth, making periodontitis the most common cause of teeth falling out.
What can you do to keep your gums healthy?
Floss all your teeth, every day- maintaining a regular flossing schedule is one of the best things you can do to keep your gums clean and healthy. Brushing twice a day is important, but brush bristles cannot always reach the tiny particles of food or plaque between your teeth or immediately under your gums. Without being flossed out, these attract bacteria, starting the gum disease process. Keep in mind that like all habits, it may take some time to become a daily flosser, but don’t give up, you will get there!
Pay attention to your gums- Recognize the early warning signs of gum disease. In the early stages (gingivitis), gum disease is reversible. Head over to our website to learn more about it, or schedule an appointment today so we can address your questions and discuss ways you can improve your gum health!

It's that time of year again! 🤩 🏀📖✏️During sports or play, accidental injuries are hard to prevent.
Brockport Dental is here for you in case of dental emergencies or tooth trauma 🦷. Here are a few handy tips:
TOOTH KNOCKED OUT: If the whole adult tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown and rinse the root gently if dirty, without scrubbing or removing tissue fragments. If possible, place tooth back in its socket or in a cup of milk. Otherwise, hold it in the mouth close to your cheek to prevent the root drying out. If it is a baby tooth, do not place it back in its socket without your dentist's recommendation. In any case, see your dentist as soon as possible!
BROKEN TOOTH: A tooth chipped by a hard blow can suffer unseen nerve damage and depending on the size of the chip, the tooth can be sensitive to heat, cold or air. Your dentist will need to take x-rays to check for hidden fractures and to make sure no tooth fragment got lodged in the lips, cheeks or tongue.
LOOSE TOOTH: Sometimes a tooth can be struck in such a way that the root or even bone fractures below the gum, making the tooth seem loose. Even if not looking very serious or painful, a loose tooth will need monitoring by your dentist to rule out any nerve damage.
A happy back to school season to everyone and play safe!
