Watching the sun as the moon covers about 90% of its face, was fascinating! At Borderland State Park in Massachusetts, people gazed up at the sun with their special sun glasses ( courtesy of the Department of Conservation and Recreation). News reports indicate thousands flock to the path of the eclipse where people had observed and experienced about 4 minutes of total darkness.
Here are some photos we captured at Borderland using a simple cell phone camera with the special sun glasses attached to it.

The video below shows how our plane took off from Lukla, back to Kathmandu during our last expedition to the Mt. Everest region in Nepal. The airport is known as the most dangerous airport in the world. The runway is very short and is surrounded by 7,000 meter (+) high mountain peaks. Listen to the crowd watching the plane take off.
Join our FIRST HIKE this Friday, Jan 5, 2024 at Borderland State Park in Easton, MA. Second Hike, Jan 19, 2024 at Massasoit State Forest, East Taunton, MA. Start building your stamina and let mother nature teach and heal you. Contact us at (508) 577-9546. Please leave your name, phone number and a brief message and we will get back to you as soon as we can or email us at [email protected]. Thank you.
Our expedition this Oct/Nov 2023 was a great success! We had a wonderful time trekking from Lukla all the way to Thukla (approximately 12 km south of Everest Basecamp). We also had the opportunity to interview veteran climbers, trekkers/adventurers about their observations and input on climate change. We captured photos and videos of villages, the receding Khumbu glaciers and the magnificent mountain peaks of some of the highest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest.
Our sincere gratitude goes to our family and many friends (old and new) for their support and encouragement. Without them, our mission would have not been possible.
Below are some photos of our expedition (part I). Part 2, fascinating Kathmandu, coming up soon. Watch for the release of our video on the expedition on YouTube.

Mangrove forests provide a wealth of benefits for people and nature, and this is why we are part of the National Chapter of the Global Mangrove Alliance.
Mangroves need our care to return to their healthy and abundant state after many years of being overexploited and degraded. Through the Global Mangrove Alliance, we can work towards halting mangrove loss, implementing science-based restoration, and building awareness all over the world. Interested parties who want to join this collaboration can contact us, and we'll be happy to gain more allies.
Understand the power of mangroves through our mangrove ecosystem restoration projects in the Ticao-Burias Pass Protected Seascape in the Bicol Region and in the municipalities of Balabac and Bataraza in southern Palawan: https://wwf.org.ph/resource-center/story-archives-2022/balabac-launches-mangrove-restoration-to-build-ecosystem-and-community-resilience/

Here are some highlights of our expeditions in the Philippines:
There were some negative as well as positive observations made while swimming with the Whale Sharks. The impact of what people do here can save the specie , but can also change their behavior and responses to humans. Good for the economy, but at what cost?
The same goes for Fish Cage Farming. There has to be some balance, guidelines and support from scientists, local as well as national government to make sure that it is good for all.

Special thanks to our dear friend, Klav Jenko who was instrumental in making our expedition, deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon a success. To our excellent chef Walter, our fearless guide Octavio (and wife Alicia), our Indigenous Waorani friends who provided us with their valuable insight about their life, culture, arts and crafts, music and dance. Special thanks to our new friend, Edu who introduced us to his family and friends, his music and the beautiful Andes mountains up North. To Mukesh and all our friends and family, who supported and made this expedition a success, thank you very much. (Join us to our next expedition, "the Pearl of the Orient Seas", the Philippines).
Trees are perennial plants that provide important uses and functions most specially in the fight against climate change. However, they also seem to tell us stories about their life through their interesting appearance, shapes and growth. Here's a few photos that we have encountered during our hikes in the woods.

Our Aquaculture Manager discovered by accident that hundreds of baby corals, liked our fish cages for their home. A discovery worth exploring further to propagate and restore devastated coral reefs in the area (and beyond). What micro organisms and other favorable conditions made this possible? We will soon find out as we collaborate with the town government and scientists locally as well as internationally.
We were at Brown University, in Providence, RI today with our Expedition Leader for Africa. Trying to connect with the Department Chair on Native American Studies for our book project on "Indigenous Knowledge, Expressions, Music, etc."
If you are a Native American, a Researcher, a Graduate student, a Professor, an expert or member of other indigenous groups from other parts of the world and interested to be part of this wonderful project, we encourage you to connect with us here at Calma Expeditions. Trees help clean the air we breath, provide shelter and shade from the heat of the sun, habitat for various wildlife, absorb harmful carbon dioxide, filter the water we drink.....just to mention a few. It takes years and years for them to grow, but in minutes or seconds, they are cut down. If trees can talk, I wonder what sorrowful idioms they have to say...

A year in review.
For year 2021, we have been to the awesome mountains of New Hampshire, to the pristine white sandy beach of Cape Cod, to the beautiful and great historic cities of Boston, New York and beyond. Collaborated/Hosted Webinars and got involved in the creation of a book on Natural Resources and Ecosystem Services, a webinar on Music and Culture (part 1 & 2), as a speaker in a conference on Blue Economy and on the impact of COVID to the Environment. With all these wonderful accomplishments, we would like to thank our partners and friends all over the world and to our families, for without their inspiration, dedication, support and hard work, we would not have achieved success in meeting our goals and objectives.
Now, for the new year of 2022, please join us for more fantastic expeditions in New England and hopefully abroad. If interested, please contact us at (508) 577-9436, leave your name, number, and a brief message, or email us at [email protected], or on Fb via messenger to reserve a spot. Capt. David W., World Explorer/Sailor, NY, USA..
“.... as we started ascending, something calming and soothing begins to fill my inner self. Even in that slow pace walking up the hills, it becomes enjoyable and brings back memories from my childhood, where we grew up in a mountain setting... the clincher was actually reaching the top, and to look around the beauty of the place, the nature the feeling of being on top made me more relaxed and rested! If I have another opportunity, I would definitely go back to those places again!”
Rev. Abellardo, R. Pastor, Adelade, Australia
