The Best Contemporary Classical Music on Bandcamp, October 2024 11/08/2024

"Adams unleashes the unmatched power of a full symphony orchestra while deftly bypassing all of its musty conventions, forging a sonic experience that somehow straddles fragility and brawn. The piece doesn’t attempt to render the planet’s existence through time, but instead it evokes its sheer magnitude through sound." — Peter Margasak

NOW STREAMING on Apple Music: 'An Atlas of Deep Time' is John Luther Adams' first large-scale work with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Commissioned and recorded by the SDSO under the baton of music director Delta David Gier, the piece taps into an ancient resonance that seems to hover imposingly, but benevolently, over our own existence — itself a blip in geological time.

Back in 2016, Gier had invited the composer to a performance of his Pulitzer-winning 'Become Ocean.' The spirit of the orchestra won Adams over, and also reminded him of his own past as a percussionist in the Fairbanks Symphony: “I’m used to audacious orchestras outside the cultural capitals," he said at the time, "— in particular those who don’t know what they’re not supposed to be able to do.”

'An Atlas of Deep Time' was mixed in Dolby ATMOS by recording engineer Nathaniel Reichman. We encourage you to experience the music in Spatial Audio, the way it was intended, on :

Back in October 2015, we invited John Luther Adams and Glenn Kotche to meet on camera at the former Rough Trade NYC space in Williamsburg to talk about the making of JLA's electro-acoustic masterpiece ILIMAQ.

Writing at the time for Pitchfork, Seth Colter Walls noted in his 7.7/10 review that the Inuit meaning of the album's title — "spirit journey" — "...isn’t kidding around. Scored for three different 'stations' of percussion instruments that the drummer moves between, this recorded version also tosses in field recordings of nature, ambient accompaniment, and some live-electronic processing of Kotche’s playing.

"The 12-minute opening movement 'Descent' sounds at first like one long bass drum roll—hurtling forward for a bit, decelerating, then pushing ahead once more. But its closing section presents odd groupings of notes for Kotche to navigate as Adams’s electronic environment undergoes subtle variations. The following movement, 'Under the Ice,' delights in a teasing ambiguity created by the blend of field recordings, electronics, and Kotche’s gentle cymbal work. The cumulative effect is so hypnotic and meditative that when clear, descending pairs of notes appear in 'The Sunken Gamelan,' they hit with the force of power chords."

David Lang, Ensemble Signal, Brad Lubman - darker 10/04/2024

OUT TODAY, available for download on our Bandcamp page and streaming on all platforms: David Lang’s ‘darker,’ recorded by NYC’s own Ensemble Signal with Brad Lubman conducting.

Scored for 12 strings, ‘darker’ is a slow, methodical and moody exploration of sound — and in the capable hands of Ensemble Signal, it becomes a piece that gradually unfolds with the fervor and foreboding of a cinematic thriller. Quite fittingly, Signal’s upcoming Oct 9 performance of the hour-long piece at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust will be accompanied by a provocative visual tableau designed by filmmaker Bill Morrison, known for his poignant use of long-forgotten, and sometimes deteriorated, archival footage that can stir the deepest recesses of our collective psyche.

“‘darker’ is both highly detailed and relentlessly restrained,” Lang explains, “and it requires an almost superhuman focus in order to keep it moving, inexorably, towards its end. In many ways, it’s more like an object than a piece of music. It’s an extreme exploration of emotional restraint — a long, slow passing from something mostly even and pleasant to something a little less pleasant.”

David Lang, Various Artists, Jeffrey Douma - the little match girl passion 11/10/2023

OUT TODAY on all platforms (and available on CD and LP): an all-new recording of David Lang's ‘the little match girl passion,’ with bonus tracks!

In producing an update of his Pulitzer-winning work, composer David Lang sought to deliver “...a leaner version of the piece, a more human version, one that emphasizes every breath, and that heightens the individuality of each singer.”

Featuring inspired performances by singers Molly Netter, Kate Maroney, Gene Stenger and Dashon Burton, who are joined by the renowned Trio Mediæval — singing the bonus track “I want to live,” as well as an updated version of “just (after song of songs)” — and Sarah Brailey, performing the album premiere of “let me come in,” this new recording accomplishes everything that Lang set out to explore, opening up fresh vistas of accessibility to a beloved work in modern choral music.
