Technology has done many great things such as make our life easier and more comfortable but the problem comes when you overly seek comfort which lowers your tolerance to adversity.

One thing that’s very challenging, takes you out of your comfort zone, and requires a lot of work is addressing your own trauma and ego. If I decide to just put walls around my hurt self and demand the world around me to tend to my wounds, I become a slave to the world around me. If I decide to look within, break down the walls, and deal with the trauma I become empowered.

The person who’s willing to do the most work internally has the tools and perspective to make the world a better place. If you want a change in the external world, develop the internal world.

What is authenticity to you??

These days I always see posts captioned “living my best life” and I wonder how true that really is.

When I sit back and reflect on my life, I remember the countless years I spent hearing the lines of my favorite songs repeating them over and over again... Or the quotes from celebrities, regurgitating them as my own. I wanted to walk their walk, talk their talk. I wanted to be cool… I wanted to be like them. That will make me happy… right?

Growing up I wanted to be accepted, I wanted to be cool… So what did I do? Mirrored the people I found cool.. who my friends found to be cool.. HOLLYWOOD!! Oh man, if only I could be like James Bond, what if I could be like Brad Pitt?? I would be soooooo happy, I would be “living my best life” 😉.

As children, we are very impressionable and we look to others to show us the way, inspire us, and influence us. Our brains are actually very plastic (when we are most impressionable and learn the easiest) until we are mid to late 20’s (this doesn’t mean we can’t change or learn after that). The only problem is if you listen to the lyrics of mainstream music its very degrading and violent. If you hear the messaging in commercials, they make you feel like you NEED something to be complete. Our society loves to profit off of people’s insecurities and a lot of the music… well, I believe lowers our consciousness. No wonder why anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pill prescriptions are so high in our society.

Fast forward another decade… OH S**T, I AM DEFINITELY NOT HAPPY! Lol… well.. that backfired.

But how?? I talk like, walk like all the successful people. I have a ton of friends, I date attractive women… Who in their right mind wouldn’t be happy?

Well… my soul was empty. I had worked so hard to become the very definition of success I had seen from the outward world that I completely neglected my inside world. I lost myself, I no longer knew who I was and my soul had been kept quiet for too long.
This took me over a decade to understand and address. Until then, I wasn’t conscious of my decisions. I had never developed mindfulness practices to grow awareness around this.

Neglecting your soul and authenticity is very toxic so what I ended up doing to cope with my issues included: alcohol, drugs, escaping with nightlife, engaged in toxic relationships, self-sabotage with potentially amazing opportunities… I didn’t consciously do any of this… because I unconsciously had been trying to become my external environment my entire life instead of truly loving and being my authentic self.

So when I hear people say “living my best life”, I wonder how much truth there is to that… I wonder if they’re striving to be their authentic self or like everyone else around them…

How can we strive to be authentic? By developing mindfulness practices. Becoming aware of how we feel, what we love, what we want. By journaling and expressing ourselves, by mediating and being alone and quiet with ourselves, by having meaningful conversations instead of generic ones. By remembering who we were before go of our unique power and allowed society to mold us..

If you decide today you want to strive for authenticity, your soul will be forever grateful.
