What is King Cake season? It follows the Church calendar and is the weeks between Epiphany (Jan 6) and Ash Wednesday (date varies, this year it's Feb 14). Mardi gras or fat Tuesday marks the end of the season and in most places you can't get a king cake after this!

Okay, so you've told me a little about King Cake. What's the deal with the baby?

Traditionally, a small porcelain baby (or a bean or coin) symbolizing Jesus, is hidden in the cake. The baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whoever finds it. That person is also responsible for bringing the next King Cake or hosting the next party!

These days, it's typically a plastic baby and it's placed in the cake after it is baked.

So what exactly is this King Cake tradition?

Epiphany or Twelfth Night celebrates the Magi or 3 Kings visit to the Christ child. Many many many years ago, people began making cakes or sweet rolls to celebrate this season of carnival that lasts from Epiphany to Mardi Gras!
