Donna Lynn Whissel (née Graham) died on July 10, 2024 after a prolonged illness. Known for her big heart, Donna found her greatest purpose caring for others as a wife, mom, step-mom, sister, aunt, friend, and nurse. Donna was devoted to her family and delighted in spending time with her loved ones as well as her four-legged grandbabies: Olive, Hazel, Teddy, Birch, and Ellie. She found her calling in healthcare as a dialysis nurse, providing care and support to patients for nearly forty years. Throughout her life, Donna volunteered for a variety of organizations including Gilda’s House and the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum. Perhaps her greatest acts of service were carried out through her informal “card ministry,” as her husband dubbed it; she never missed a birthday, anniversary, or other life milestone, and if she knew you were going through a hard time, she would have a card in the mail faster than you could say Hallmark. Despite an endearing aversion to technology, Donna was rarely spotted without her Kindle in hand—she loved to read. She also enjoyed watching hockey and football (despite the abuse she received for her support of the Patriots). Donna was predeceased by her father, Charles, mother, Oma Jean, and nephew, Tyler. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dan, son, Paul (Erin), daughter, Lindsey, step-daughters Jennifer (Louis), Betsy (Michael), and Amybeth (Anthony), and step-son, Matthew, as well as grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Donna loved deeply and was loved just as deep. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the MPN Research Foundation (https://mpnresearchfoundation.org/), which is dedicated to advancing research in pursuit of new treatments—and eventually cures—for blood cancers known collectively as MPNs; the type of cancer that ultimately took Donna’s life. Another beautiful way to honor her legacy would be to send a card to someone you know. As she once told her daughter, “Sometimes it’s nice just to get a card in the mail.” A small, private gathering to celebrate Donna’s life will be held at a later date. State, Ruth M.
Aug 28, 1926 – Jul 1, 2024
When Ruth State’s husband, Joseph, considered starting his own business in the spring of 1957, he debated doing so. With no savings, four small children, and no health insurance, the step would be a major gamble. But enthusiastically backed by Ruth, he founded J. M. State Refrigeration Sales & Service. The company, which began as a residential service repair firm, became in the 1980s and 1990s one of upstate New York’s major businesses in service and sales of commercial refrigeration equipment. Born in Buffalo, the daughter of Alton R. Dehlinger, a salesman, and Emma E. Dehlinger (nee Walsh), a homemaker, Ruth attended Kensington High School. Employed as a file clerk at the Buffalo district office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-and late 1940s, she went on to secure a position as a draftsperson. The only woman in an office of 10 men, she plotted soundings on geodetic maps of the Great Lakes region. In her spare time, Ruth worked as a fashion model for major agencies and department stores in Buffalo. In the early years following the establishment of J. M. State Refrigeration, she took an active part in growing the business, serving as the firm’s collections agent and bookkeeper while simultaneously carrying on her work as a homemaker in the Town of Tonawanda. A lover of the arts, music was central in her life. She trained as a lyric soprano, competed in music competitions, and sang as a soloist in the St. Louis R.C. Church choir. An accomplished collage artist, she crafted scenes of landscapes intricately assembled from widely sourced print materials. Ruth also enjoyed gardening and sewing. An avid traveler, she flew with her husband, a licensed recreational pilot, to their second home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and across the United States. Her husband predeceased her in 2008. She is survived by her children, Mark, Paul, Barbara, and Nancy, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A private Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Louis R.C. Church and a private interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Online condolences may be placed at http://www.TheDietrichFuneralHome.com.
