A diocese functioning with a total of 22 priests as at 2023: 1 Premonstratensian, 2 Oblates of Mary Immaculate, 3 Comboni, 4 Augustinians and 4 "fidei donum" from the dioceses of Kisangani, Lolo, Isiro-Niangara and Mahagi-Nioka . Among the 8 diocesan priests, 2 have reached retirement age. So practically, only 6 active priests from the diocese.

We are talking about the Catholic diocese of Buta in Democratic Republic of Congo which just got a new bishop (this year 2024) after the former bishop, Joseph Banga, resigned at the age 63 in 2021.

The new bishop of Buta (Bas-Uele Province), Mgr Martin Banga, was the regional vicar of the order of Saint Augustine, professor of sociology and anthropology at the Saint Augustine University of Kinshasa. Born on December 1, 1972 in Dungu, in the Haut-Uele province, he studied philosophy at the Saint Augustin University of Kinshasa and theology at Saint Eugène de Mazenod Institute in Kinshasa. In 2020, he defended his doctoral thesis in sociology at the Gregorian University of Rome.

Let us continue praying for the new bishop in particular and the diocese in general. Let the wind of the Holy Spirit keep blowing!

In Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, a monastery is the residence for men and women who have taken the religious vows as well as seclusion and stability within an abbey. They are generally called monks (men) and nuns (women). Generally, they are not into public pastorals (only exceptions) like other religious.

THE ABBOTT and ABBESS.

An Abbot is the Superior of a masculine Abbey (monks).
The abbess (or mother superior) is the superior of a feminine abbey (nuns).

Most of Abbots and Abbess have the special privilege to wear the episcopal symbols: the mitre (bishop's long hat), the crosier (bishop's staff), the pectoral cross and the ring. But THEY ARE NOT BISHOPS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ORDAINED BUT INSTALLED. However, some Abbots can be consecrated bishops if need be according to the Holy See!

The election of an Abbot or Abbess is strictly reserved to members of the abbey under the supervision of a bishop or his representative or a prelate delegated by the Holy See(Vatican) depending on the jurisdictional status of the abbey.

INFORMATION : What makes a bishop is not all those things he wears externally: Mitre, shepherd's ring, pectoral cross and crosier. They are just symbols of his office. The Abbotts/ abbesses receive almost same because of their office they occupy in the abbey (monastery).

What makes a bishop is his episcopal consecration ( or ordination in a common language) which is the 3rd and highest degree of Holy Orders after diaconate and sacerdotal ordinations.

With the episcopal ordination or consecration, ONLY A BISHOP CAN ORDAIN. Abbotts and abbesses can't ordain because they are not bishops.

Rt. Revd Richard Pain, a former Anglican Bishop of Monmouth, will be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church within the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, on Sunday 2nd of July, 2023, at St Basil & St Gwladys, Rogerstone Newport. He will be received by The Rt Revd Keith Newton, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

It is important to understand that the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham is a structure similar to a diocese, inaugurated under the late Pope Benedict XVI to allow former Anglicans to enter the full communion of the Catholic Church whilst retaining some elements of the Anglican tradition that nurtured its members. It has its own Eucharistic liturgy which preserves some elements of the Book of Common Prayer.
