Dan and Phyllis did such a spectacular job for all the years before me. It was hard to imagine anyone else running the beloved Buffalo and WNY skate shop...

Then opportunity came knocking, and wow, what a wild ride it's been!!

Congratulations to Gianna and Bella for their Sister New Skate Day! 🎉

These girls are doing well in their basic skills classes and ready to take on private lessons!

The adjustable hockey skates they were using were making learning new skills tricky 😣

Heads up TSE Fam-- the vacation countdown begins ⏰

We will be CLOSED this coming Friday through Monday, that's 7/19 through 7/22 to celebrate a family reunion and enjoy some summertime fun!

Please book your sharpenings and fittings accordingly so we don't keep skates hostage, and be sure you're stocked on laces and socks before we close up on Thursday 7/18 at 6pm 😎

Here we go again! Yup, we're lace shaming 😏

You know we only do it cause we care 💜

Do you know that when your laces' TAILS don't match the TOES it's time to change them out for a fresh set 😎

What does this mean?

The TAILS (the part you tie with the most) go through a lot of tension! They get pulled on a LOT when we're trying to get the ankle and midfoot secure, and they are the only thing holding on tight when you're launching up for jump take offs and coming back down for landings.

They're pretty flexy when they're new, but over hours of skating they'll stretch out and absorb dirt and oils from your hands which is where they lose their grip.

How does that feel?

👎 The ties don't stay secure

👎 They let your foot and ankle move

👎 They don't encourage feedback from the ice to your foot

👎 They look dirty and messy 😣

If you feel like you need to retie your skates during practice, Step 1: new laces!

Freyja joined the Crystal Club! 🎉

She had a great season in her last pair of Riedell Skates - Ice and when her feet grew we just needed her skates to catch up with her skills.

How long do new skates last? 🤔

Depends on the feet! 👣

We're always hoping for a good 9-15 months of skating 🤞 It's the growth timing that's always a guess and we wish we could tell the future!

The good news is that as a skater is growing in their feet they're also growing in their skills, so when they can't fit into their skates it's likely time for a boot update anyway 😎

So Freyja's last skates were great for her early single jumps, and now the Crystal set with her support insole will carry her through the rest and perhaps into the first axel attempts this year! ✨

One of our favorite things is seeing skaters we knew as kids still getting skates into their college and adult years. It doesn't have to end after high school!

Hannah works hard at Boston University and skates for their collegiate figure skating team 😍

Her old Edea Skates Ice Fly boots from high school were showing their age and feeling broken down after several years of skating, and she has no plans to slow down now!

Her old skates were falling apart 😱

Claire pointed out the extra creasing and cracking at her last sharpening to her parents and they scheduled a fitting right away to get stronger skates 💪

Eva's new Jackson Ultima Skates Artistes are going to be PERFECT for getting her single jumps under control this summer ✨

We did a couple pinky toe bumps for comfort, and added our support insole to help align her foot, and she was all set!

Twin skaters, but not twin feet!

It's been so fun keeping up with these girls' fit preferences over the last 7 years 🥰

After many pairs of identical boots our most recent set of skates are taking a slightly different turn!

Ania stuck with her classic Riedell Skates - Ice Vega boot with a more roomy fit and waterproof, microfiber build.

Emma took a different path for more support in a Riedell Bronze Star featuring a closer foot fit and all-leather construction.

But they're still in the blades department soaring high with the Jackson Ultima Skates Legacy 7 blades ✨

After the easiest comfort adjustment and blade balance session EVER we're thrilled to set these skates free to break in for summer competitions 💜

QUICK!! Which Risport Skates Electra boot is laced snug and secure, and which boot provides a little less hold? 🧐

If you said RIGHT leaves you loosey goosey you're right! ... I mean, correct!

Visual cues are a great way to help establish good lacing patterns.

Look at the shape of the tongue visible underneath the laces.

🔎 See how the right boot is more open towards the middle and the ankle?

🔎 See how the left boot is mostly parallel at the midfoot and ankle?

Neither shape is WRONG, but they WILL feel different on your foot and provide a different skating experience 💜

So if you can't tell whether your skates are too tight or too loose or just right, take a look!
