Myth #2: I'm not overweight, so I don't have sleep apnea.
While obesity is the primary risk factor for sleep apnea, as indicated by sleep experts, it's worth noting that even those with a regular or slightly elevated weight can be impacted. Other elements like facial and neck structure also play a role. Those with enlarged tonsils, a small jaw, a significant overbite, a set-back chin, or a more oversized neck are at a higher risk of encountering sleep apnea.

CNN reports that people with severe sleep apnea who spent less time in deep sleep (also known as slow-wave sleep) had more damage to the white matter of their brain than people who had more deep sleep.
Dr. Diego Carvalho, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, stated, "For every 10% decrease in time spent in deep sleep, there was an increase of white matter hyperintensities in the brain similar to the effect of being 2.3 years older."

A new study shows that otherwise healthy middle-aged men newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea have poorer mental function in areas such as judgment, impulse control and recognizing other people’s feelings than men without the condition.
Dr. Ivana Rosenzweig, a neuropsychiatrist who heads the Sleep and Brain Plasticity Centre at Kings College London, states, "Sleep apnea has been linked with memory and thinking problems, but the new study emphasizes how important it is to treat it early."

A new study published in Neurology, the American Academy of Neurology medical journal, shows that sleeping disturbance symptoms are associated with an increased risk of acute stroke.
Mitchell Levine, DMD, president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), comments, "Important information like this further confirms that getting the right amount of sleep every night is an essential pillar to health."
Sleep disturbances can be classified as:
• Short or long sleep (sleeping longer on average than those in the same age group)
• Prolonged napping
• Impaired sleep quality
• Obstructive sleep apnea symptoms, like snoring, snorting, and breathing cessation

"You basically bought a device, you find out that, actually, it could harm you," said Dr. Vinay Rathi, an otolaryngologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital in Boston who studies medical device regulation.
"And then you struggle to find a replacement device...If I were a patient, I would be livid."

From the AADSM: The Anterior Growth Guidance Appliance (AGGA) currently involved in national lawsuits is not the same as an oral appliance for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Oral appliances are safe, effective, and clinically proven to treat sleep apnea. These devices are recommended as a treatment option by many physician organizations (AASM, ACP, AAFP + the AHA). These appliances are only worn while you sleep to stabilize the jaw in a forward position to keep the upper airway open. They are not intended to permanently change a patient's skeletal, palate, or jaw structure.

Did you know healthy sleep patterns can help you live longer?
In a new study of over 172,000 respondents, those who meet five beneficial factors of sleep - including length of sleep and ability to stay asleep - were found to live longer.
For more information on these factors and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center study, visit: https://www.kgw.com/article/news/health/healthy-sleep-patterns-lifespan-new-study/283-68496515-5d57-482c-bcd9-46d314a270c2
Do you know that CPAP isn't your only option?
Oral appliances are also more readily available than CPAP machines. Due to the supply chain shortage, the average wait time for CPAP is 3+ months - but just three weeks for an oral appliance! An AADSM-Qualified Dentist can treat your snoring and sleep apnea with a custom-designed oral appliance made just for you.
