Did you know that there are many interesting long-held beliefs about boating and luck? In honor of St. Patrick's Day, we thought it would be fun to share some with you. Check them out below! ☘️
1️⃣ No Bananas on Board: Since the 1700s, bananas have been connected with bad luck, especially on ships, and the superstition even persists today on recreational fishing boats. When trade ships sailing from the Caribbean & Spain started to disappear, legend has it that only bananas would be found floating amongst the wreckages so seafarers believed the bananas had caused the ship to sink. 🍌
2️⃣ Cats are Cool: Many boaters believe that it's good luck to have a cat on board. Cats on ships were believed to have superpowers and be able to predict or control the weather. One popular belief stated that cats could start storms through magic stored in their tails. Others believed if a cat licked its fur against the grain it meant a hailstorm was coming; if it sneezed, rain was on the way; and if it was frisky, the wind would soon blow. 🐈⬛
3️⃣ Don’t Change The Name: Seafaring tradition states that it's considered bad luck to change a boat's name once it has been christened. Some sailors believed their boats took on a mind of their own once they were named, while others stated that renaming a ship meant you were trying to trick the gods of the sea. 🚤
4️⃣ No Whistling Allowed: Sailors commonly believed that whistling aboard a boat would bring bad weather. Whistling was said to challenge the wind and cause it to increase, which could bring in a storm. 😙
5️⃣ Friends with Fins: Dolphins are considered a lucky symbol by many boaters, and seeing a pod of dolphins swimming alongside a boat is believed to bring good luck. 🐬

We're all so busy these days, so why not take some time to S-L-O-W down and enjoy the season? Getting outdoors is one of the best ways to enjoy a slow summer since there's so much to see and do. In this article, Discover Boating shares their 5 Ways To Enjoy a Slow Summer: https://boatfbc.com/5waystoenjoyslowsummer
Research proves it: being on the water can not only make you happier, it also has many health benefits! Science shows that while you're on the water your feel-good hormones (dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin) go up, while stress hormones (cortisol) go down. Read more about the fascinating research in the book "Blue Mind" by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols.
