It's special to see such an amazing cedar growing to this size but unfortunately sometimes they are growing directly on the future building site of a home. Live oak wood is one of the densest tree woods on the planet, weighing an average of 76 pounds per cubic foot, though some have been measured at 95 pounds per cubic foot. That’s why mature branches, laden with such weight, often bow to the ground. Once they touch the ground, they find the strength and support to begin reaching up again, seeking light and sky.

True also when you remove Cedar that are choking out our native Live Oak trees!

This slice shows how forest thinning can free up resources for remaining trees, allowing the trees to grow larger, more quickly and sequester more carbon from the atmosphere.

BIGTOOTH MAPLES FOR BOERNE TEXAS Sponsored by the Cibolo Preserve since 2006 Tree Adoption Guidelines
The Native Plant Society of Texas-Boerne Chapter has a limited number of 15-gallon maple trees to be awarded to qualifying Boerne residents, organizations or businesses for the purpose of enhancing the local landscape and establishing Boerne as a prime destination for viewing fall foliage. Included in this program are free mentors, tree planting demonstration, care instructions and supplies to help ensure the survival of each maple tree planted. All completed application forms must be received no later than October 1. Trees arrive in November. Priority will be given to those applicants wanting to plant near the most visible and public locations (parks, schools, playgrounds, main entryways and roadways).
Funding is provided by the Cibolo Preserve since 2006. Applicant’s Commitment:
● Submit a planting site that is within the Boerne city limits.
● Provide a signed letter from landowner or local officials giving permission to plant on proposed planting site
if not the personal property of the applicant.
● Plant tree in a visible location so that it is visible to the public from a city street.
● “Call Before You Dig” at 811. Ensure planting site is safe. This is a free service and required by law to ensure excavations will not affect utility cables and pipes (www.call811.com).
● Plant and water tree as soon as possible after receiving the tree and before December 31.
● Water and provide maintenance for at least the first three years after planting so that the tree can develop a large enough root system to survive on its own. Supplemental watering may be required during droughts even for older established maples.
● Protect tree from deer browsing foliage or rubbing the bark off the trunk. Cages are provided with each tree and must remain around tree for many years until bark is rough and no longer in danger of deer rubbing it. As tree grows taller, cages can be downsized to be more narrow so that is fits loosely around the trunk but not rubbing against the bark of the tree.

Giving back to our community! Today we cleared brush and mesquite acreage to reclaim land for a new equestrian camping area at the Land Heritage Institute. The AERC River Run endurance ride will use this facility in February in San Antonio, TX. Giddy up! 💕🐎

Last week Dan’s Tree Service celebrated 20 years of operations. We appreciate all of our faithful customers, wonderful employees, family and friends who have supported us! Thank you so much! We celebrated by maintaining some of the special Heritage Live Oak trees that Dan’s family has owned on the family ranch for seven generations.
