The last time I saw Chez was at a mutual friend's birthday party a week after the election. We touched on the lunacy of Trump's New World Order, but as it often did with us, our talk eventually shifted to arguing the merits of the year's Oscar contenders. We both have, you know, opinions.

Chez was enamored of La La Land - the unbridled joy of it, the arc of hope and disappointment. Probably the music, too, though he'd never have admitted that to me. :) Moonlight was a close second - as a Florida boy, he loved that the the story being told was one of people in places that the rest of the community would prefer to ignore, a story he often chased himself as a journalist.

Still, I'd like to think that yesterday's Oscar screwup was somehow Chez's work, arranging it so he could hear acceptance speeches for both of his favorites. And also, to f**k with us.

Godspeed to ya, you son of a bitch. You'll be missed.
