Thank you, from the bottom of my 🩷, for your kindness and support this week.
It means the world to me.
I have always believed that if you can’t say anything nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all.
But when it comes to my kids, their hearts, their daily care, their medical insurance, their future needs? It’s so much more difficult to actually do.
Many of you have reached out with overwhelming kindness to make sure that we are OK. I know you’ve read between the lines the past few months here and suspect that something has gone very wrong.
It has.
Mick left our family last fall and is pursuing divorce. The reasons are complicated, but the reality is the same - he wants nothing to do with being a husband or, more importantly, a father.
I don’t plan to speak publicly about this any further right now. But I haven’t been able to form the words to respond to your messages individually, so I hope this will suffice.
For now, my focus is on taking care of and finding ways to support myself and my two ridiculously cool kids, especially as it relates to health insurance and medical care.
This side of heaven can be absolutely brutal. And yet, no matter how bad it is right now, there are wonderful friends and family members encouraging me, supporting me, loving me.
It’s a reminder that this side of heaven is also beautiful. 🩷

Exactly this.
It's true. We promise.

Good morning.

😐
18 today.
I’m so impressed with the man he has become. Compassionate and curious, funny and smart.
He is a fierce advocate for anyone hurting or struggling, and he most certainly inherited his mother’s saracasm.
I’m so grateful for 18!years of being his mom.
Happy Birthday to my youngest, my baby, my heart.
Outdoor rock climbing with my child.
It’s beautiful and sacred. It’s also hiking through the desert with 35 lbs worth of gear on your back.
Feels like a metaphor for motherhood, right?
Having a program with lessons and online resources that are appropriate for my son’s learning needs has seemed impossible to find, until now.
Customizable Online Homeschool Resources For All Ages: K-12 This program has online homeschool resources that are customizable for an individualized educational experience.
We have struggled for years to figure out the best way to help my son meet the foreign language requirement for high school graduation in our state.
Even when he was younger and in a co-op Spanish class, I remember thinking that we needed to focus on reading and writing in his native language first. If he struggled to read and write in English, a language he has spoken his entire life, how would he realistically be able to do it in another language?
We tried every program, sometimes more than once.
Nothing worked and every class we tried only increased his frustration.

When we teach our children, it is important to encourage them to use all their senses as they learn. Have thought-provoking discussions (let them ask questions and dialogue, too), encourage them to build models, paint, or re-enact history. And let them explain to others what they are doing. This is the best way to learn...and it is more fun, too!
I have been homeschooling now for 13 years. It’s been exactly the right choice for my family. The freedom to learn at a pace that works best and explore the topics that are most meaningful to my kids has been a gift to us all.
But…
The one subject that challenged, discouraged, demotivated, and made me question our choice for the first several years was math.
My child struggles with math anxiety and I know from hearing from so many of you that we are not alone!
I've learned that math anxiety doesn’t have to have to impact your child’s learning and your homeschool day.

If your healthcare provider recommends the "Starve it out" method... RUN⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This method is NOT appropriate for kids with autism, and can even land them in the emergency room due to malnutrition.
This method basically says to just remove all of your child's currently accepted foods and only offer "nutritious foods" instead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*
Any of you here who have an autistic child who is a picky eater KNOW that their picky eating will not just resolve with hunger. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My method to picky eating helps build trust, confidence, and a positive relationship with food that will be sustainable. Interested in next steps?

Homeschooling a child with profound learning differences is, by far, one of the most complicated and pressure-filled jobs I have ever had. When your child struggles to learn to read and you're homeschooling, it can feel like you are failing - all the time.
Learning to read at home means the responsibility is all on you. When your child struggles with reading, it can feel like you are the problem.
