On June 26th, Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers from the California program participated in an advocacy day in the state capitol. 🏛️ During their advocacy day, they met with legislative and committee offices of the California State Legislature in Sacramento to advocate for issues affecting the care and services they provide to their communities and to offer recommendations on how FFN caregivers can be better supported through policy. On June 26th, Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers from the California (LFH) Program participated in an advocacy day in the state capitol. This event marked a significant milestone, as it was the first experience in formal advocacy for these caregivers. Over the course of the 12-month program, these FFN leaders developed an understanding of the California policy landscape surrounding license-exempt home-based care. Armed with this knowledge, they met with legislative and committee offices of the California State Legislature in Sacramento to advocate for issues affecting the care and services they provide to their communities and to offer recommendations on how FFN caregivers can be better supported through policy. Early Edge California’s Advisory Group Leadership Council (lead participants from our Educator, Parent, and Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) Advisory Groups) convened its second meeting of the year on June 3rd. The meeting featured a listening session to solicit the Leadership Council’s feedback on messaging to support Early Edge’s advocacy around strengthening and care. The council also heard a presentation from one of its members and devoted time to a planning discussion for the first-ever All-Advisory Groups Meeting which happened in late July. NEW! The California Department of Education (CDE), Early Education Division (EED) has released the California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF). The PTKLF describe the knowledge and skills that most children ages three to five and a half develop in a high-quality program. The PTKLF is a revision to the Preschool Learning Foundations originally released in 2008. The PTKLF are intended for use in , the California State Preschool Program, and other state-funded, federally-funded, and private preschool programs in California including school-based, center-based, and home-based settings. Earlier this month, Early Edge California's Policy Analyst, Andrew Avila, joined the State Board of Education Meeting on July 10th to give public comment around our co-sponsored bill and provide recommendations for supporting multilingual learners.

On June 12th, Early Edge California convened the eleventh Community of Practice for the (LFH) program. In this discussion, the LFH cohort, which is made up of Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) providers from across the state, completed the final preparations and reviewed the agenda for their upcoming advocacy day at the state capitol. 🏛️ The providers developed talking points on issues such as access to subsidies and increased wages, navigation to resources and supports, opportunities for professional development and training, assistance in pathways to obtaining licensure, and representation in the new alternative rate methodology. As a culmination of their introduction to advocacy within the program, the LFH advocacy day at the state capitol marks their first experience formally engaging policymakers on key issues that impact their work. 🤝 Read the blog: https://ow.ly/vMNf50SLaF8
Dual Language Learners ( ) are children whose first language is a language other than English or children who are developing two or more languages, one of which may be English. This growing population of children in California’s programs and classrooms enriches the learning environment with cultural and linguistic diversity. 🌎 However, supporting their success requires strong partnerships between families and early educators. 🤝 This final blog in our series shares how our recent listening sessions with California State Preschool Program ( ) teachers and administrators underscored the pressing need for culturally and linguistically responsive strategies to effectively support DLL children and their families.
