Today is National Airborne Day!
On August 16, 1940, the U.S. Army successfully tested the concept of inserting ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute.
Today, all military parachutists from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force complete the same training to become a military parachutist.
Hug a Paratrooper today!
Reminder:
Post Social tonight, August 7, at La Tolteca, at 6:30pm
Today is National Purple Heart Day.
Today, August 7, 2024 is the 92nd anniversary of the establishment of the Purple Heart Medal.
Purple Heart Day is a national day of remembrance honoring men and women who served within the military and received the Purple Heart for being wounded or killed in combat.
The Purple Heart was initially designed as The Badge of Military Merit, an honor created by General George Washington in 1782 for “singularly meritorious action.” Few soldiers were awarded the badge during the Revolutionary War, and the badge was not awarded again.
General Douglas MacArthur established the modern Purple Heart on August 7, 1932 during the bicentennial of George Washington’s Birthday. During World War Two, the Purple Heart changed from an award for meritorious service to one honoring those who were wounded or killed in war.
The Purple Heart is currently awarded to military service members wounded or killed during combat operations. The medal poignantly reminds us of the price of freedom and the sacrifices made by those who’ve served.
Echoing the words of the National Commander…
Happy Independence Day!
Hoping you have a wonderful Independence Day celebration!
Stay safe!
Happy Birthday, U.S. Army!

As we remember D-Day, we thank that great generation of men and women for their sacrifice and doing what they must to protect us and the world.
“At the core, the American citizen soldiers knew the difference between right and wrong, and they didn’t want to live in a world in which wrong prevailed. So they fought, and won, and we, all of us, living and yet to be born, must be forever profoundly grateful.” - Stephen Ambrose
On Memorial Day, we are eternally grateful to the men and women who served in the military and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Today is the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe with Germany’s unconditional surrender to Allied Forces on May 8, 1945.
It would be another three months before the Second World War would end in the Pacific Theater.
Happy Victory in Europe Day!
Today is National Vietnam Veterans Day.
On March 29, 1973, the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished; this was officially the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. Additionally, the Hanoi government released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.
We offer a special recognition to those veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or elsewhere on active duty in support of the war effort from 1955 to 1975.
From The National Medal of Honor Museum:
Today, March 25th, marks National Medal of Honor Day, a day designated to recognize and honor the recipients of the United States’ highest military decoration. Awarded by the President, in the name of Congress, the Medal of Honor commemorates those who have shaped our nation’s history and continue to inspire its future with their acts of valor, going “above and beyond the call of duty.”
Of the 40 million Americans who have served in the Armed Forces since the Civil War, fewer than 4,000 have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Today, there are only 63 living recipients scattered across our nation.
In just one year, the National Medal of Honor Museum, being constructed in Arlington, Texas, will open its doors to the public, serving as a lasting tribute to these ordinary individuals who accomplished the extraordinary. Their legacies will be preserved for future generations to learn from and draw inspiration.
Join us as we celebrate and pay respect to their illustrations of: courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and patriotism.

Veterans Day
November 11th
On Veterans Day in the United States, many people wear a red silk poppy to honor all living veterans.
In Europe, the day is known as Remembrance Day, a day to honor those who died in World War One and later conflicts. The First World War officially ended on November 11th, 1919 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.)
Poppies grew on the battlefields of France after World War One. Over the years, the poppy has become a lasting memorial to those who died during military conflicts. In the United States, the poppy has also become a symbol to honor living veterans.
Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps, established November 10, 1775.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars was officially established in 1913 upon merging with two other veterans organizations, the Veterans of Foreign Service and The Colorado Society of the Army of the Philippines.
In honor of our predecessor organizations, we recognize September 29, 1899 as our founding date.
On September 18, 1947, the United States Air Force was established as a separate military service.
Happy Birthday, U.S. Air Force!
Hope to see you at the VFW Post 5412 Recruiting Booth during the Burke Centre Fall Festival.

Happy Coast Guard Day!
On August 4, 1790, the Revenue Cutter Service, Revenue-Marine, forerunner to the U.S. Coast Guard, was created. In 1915, the service was merged by an act of Congress with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to form the U.S. Coast Guard.
Seventy years ago today, on July 27, 1953, after over three years of fighting on the Korean Peninsula, military leaders from the U.S. (representing the United Nations Command and South Korea), from North Korea, and from the People's Republic of China signed the Korean Armistice Agreement to end hostilities between North and South Korea.
