Labor Day became a national holiday in the United States due to the relentless efforts of labor activists in the late 19th century. The origins of the holiday are closely tied to the labor movement's struggles for fair working conditions and workers' rights.
In the late 1800s, American workers faced grueling conditions, including long hours, low wages, and unsafe workplaces. Amidst growing labor unrest and strikes, there was a strong push for a day to honor the contributions of workers. One of the pivotal moments was the 1882 parade organized by the Central Labor Union in New York City, which highlighted the demand for a national labor holiday.
The movement gained momentum after the violent Pullman Strike of 1894, which saw clashes between striking workers and federal troops, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. The unrest alarmed both the public and policymakers. To appease the workers and stabilize the situation, Congress swiftly passed a bill to establish Labor Day as a federal holiday.
On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the legislation, making the first Monday in September a national holiday dedicated to honoring the labor movement and the contributions of American workers. The holiday was a compromise that acknowledged the workers' plight while promoting peace and unity. Today, Labor Day stands as a tribute to the labor force's achievements and ongoing struggles for fair treatment.
