Thrilled to see this initiative of the Opera Company of Colombia - a tour of Masterclasses led by my fabulous and greatly missed colleagues from the Universidad Central, Alejandro Roca and Camila Toro
Thanks Erin Grainger for organizing a great masterclass with your voice students at St. Michaelβs College yesterday! It was wonderful hearing their lovely voices and strong preparation and giving them some tips.
Great advice from my fabulous colleague and friend about making your very own βsinger maskβ!
THIS is what I mean when I explain to my students that when they walk on stage, even if itβs been a bad day or a bad month, even if singing has been a confusing or frustrating chore for them recently, even if theyβve been having doubts about their talent or their choices or their path, they have a JOB to do, a job that has less to do with them and so much more to do with the beautiful and powerful responsibility they hold.
Exciting!!!

Students: please read!!!!! And continue our focus on getting your tongue into a better - and looser - position!
Your tongue acts as a rudder and support system through a fascial line that runs right down to your toes!
In nearly all my patients, I see poor tongue posture, and the links to bad spinal posture, breathing, and other issues are felt right throughout the body.
The simplest way we can see how the tongue is so influential is how it supports proper head posture. When the tongue is down and forward, forward head posture and mouthbreathing occurs.
Over time this associates with a narrow jaw, crooked teeth, and sleep disorders.
But⦠you guessed it, as always the mouth is a gateway for so many other systems in the body.
The tongue is an extremely complex muscular and fascial rudder system.
It guides all the structures of the myofascial continuity that runs from the inner arch of the foot all the way up through the middle of the body to the tongue and jaw muscles.
Isnβt that amazing?
Actually the tongue is potentially more important for core stability than turning on your actual core.
Our core begins deep under the arch with the insertions of the tendons from the lower leg, especially tibialis posterior.
To find its insertion, feel just under the inside arch of the foot, just underneath and forward of protrusion of the navicular bone you can feel a bit over an inch in front of your tibial malleolus on the inside of your ankle.
This point will respond to a soft-but-energy-rich touch that is held, and also to a more firm and direct fascial release. Pressing here can make a flow of feeling run up the fascial line.
So for better core support, spinal, hip and leg strength, you need to work on your tongue posture.
During exercise practice sealing the tongue to the roof of the mouth, this turns on the fascial rudder to the toes. It takes time and you need to work on making the BACK of the tongue connect to the soft palate. More on this to come.
Music is all that! (and a bag of chips) ππ΅
The Sarah Cullins Vocal Studio presents selections from the beautiful Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736). This is primarily an Easter gift to our friends and neighbors at eldercare residences across Vermont, many of whom we serenaded last summer in mini outdoor concerts as part of Project Serenade. These selections were recorded during the dark winter months of the pandemic in basements, living rooms, bed rooms or wherever there was some peace and quiet, by singers ages 12-70 of all levels and backgrounds. We hope you enjoy it. Thank YOU for keeping us singing!

SO proud of Merrill Cameron for this fabulous rendition, for breaking the mold, taking risks, and singing with so much feeling and nuance!!
Well-deserved congratulations to my student Blayne Fitzgerald!!
Iβm excited to share YOW member and my private voice student George Laneβs recent video of βVoi che sapete.β George is a junior at U32 High School and watching such a young singer commit to so fully - and enjoy so fully - an operatic role, is a joy to witness! Hope you enjoy as well!

Sarah Cullins bio and teaching philosophy
Burlington-native Sarah Cullins enjoys an active career as a soprano soloist in opera, oratorio, art song and orchestral repertoire. She trained at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and at Mannes College of Music in New York, and spent 10 years teaching and singing in BogotΓ , Colombia, where she founded the voice and opera program at the Universidad Central, now the standard-bearer of classical voice training in the country. While in South America, she performed with Colombiaβs major opera companies and orchestras nation-wide, as well as appearing with the National Opera in Guatemala. In Vermont she is a frequent soloist with the Opera Company of Middlebury (with whom she has sung 5 roles), the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, Vermont Virtuosi, the Burlington Choral Society, the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the Vermont Philharmonic, and has performed many operas and oratorios with the Vermont Mozart Festival and Aurora (Oriana) Singers. With her husband, Colombian guitarist Daniel Gaviria, she performs in venues throughout Vermont, celebrating Latin American and Spanish song as part of the 8 Cuerdas duo (www.8cuerdas.com)
Sarahβs teaching activities include her private studio, managed through the Middlebury Community Music Center (www.mcmcvt.org) and frequent visits to local choral groups to work on vocal technique. She is the Vocal Coach of the Bella Voce womenβs chorus, and has offered workshops for choral directors at the VACDA Great Day of Singing, as well as with several local high school and community choirs. Before launching her private studio, Sarah was an Affiliate Artist at the University of Vermont for 5 years.
Sarahβs teaching philosophy is based on the idea that, while vocal technique is never an end to itself, cultivating efficiency and control leads to greater confidence and artistic freedom. She enjoys giving her students the skills to develop an efficient, coordinated and physically strong vocal technique, as well as the consciousness and curiosity to be able to problem solve and to explore their own unique instrument. Then comes the fun of putting this in practice by creating beautiful music! She teaches students of all ages and abilities, beginning at age 13, and focuses mainly on classical technique and repertoire.
