Coast Guard Cutter Northland was the last cruising cutter equipped with a sailing rig built for the Coast Guard. In 1936, the sails were removed and the masts were trimmed. During World War II, it patrolled the waters off of Greenland (which was controlled by Denmark). Cutter Northland made the first U.S. naval capture of the war—three months before the U.S. entered WWII. On Sept. 12, 1941, it came upon a German-controlled Norwegian sealer. A boarding party captured the ship and discovered N**i radio equipment and documents that led it to an enemy radio station on the island. The Coasties raided the station, arrested three radiomen, and seized their equipment and radio codes.
Looking for the perfect gift this holiday season? Consider the gift of love and companionship that comes with adopting a dog or cat from the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
The shelter at 35 Academy Drive in Westampton has numerous pets who are looking to celebrate the holidays with a new loving family, and as an added incentive the shelter’s adoption fee is being waived for adult cats and adult dogs throughout December.
It's the perfect time to bring a new loving pet home, so plan to make a visit to the shelter soon.
