The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has been following the same participants for 90 years, found our happiness follows an upside down bell curve of sorts through the course of our lives.

Life satisfaction is high in our early 20s, then declines into our mid-40s & 50s, before increasing again... placing me firmly at the bottom of this bell curve.

So I find myself asking... How do I carve out more space for joy at the bottom of this bell curve? How can we enhance our well being across all phases of our lives?

The answer that keeps coming to this seemingly complicated question, is more simple than I previously ever thought... have more fun.

I feel that Mardi gras, the epitome of indulgence ahead of the Lenten fasting, can help us understand what it means to have more fun.

It does not have be feast or famine, when it comes to the fun levels in our lives. It does not have to be Mardi gras or Lent.

Space for our happiness can be carved throughout our lives, no matter the pressures or obligations we may be feeling at any given time.

To learn to revel in those closest to us within our daily routines. To make consistent room for our passions in whatever capacity we can afford at any given time. To let the good times roll, as they say in New Orleans...and have fun with it all... as much as we can.

This is how we appreciate the adventure of life amidst the slog of inevitable struggles inherent to our human condition.

To root our approach to living in a philosophy of fun is to fully relish this one amazing opportunity at life.

I'm a twin... So I even had a womb-mate. Throughout my life I always shared a bedroom or abode, until my thirties, when I was unexpectedly set free following a devastating breakup from a "significant other."

Aloneness was something I always feared. Though I wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe it's because I had never tried it. Maybe it's because so many people are so desperate to avoid it and they're more than willing to saddle there life outlook on yours.

It wasn't until I fully inhabited the idea of being single (which admittedly took some time 🤪) that I came to know the richness and opportunity it can bring when embraced entirely.

Sure this can be hard. Sure there are times that the loneliness stings. Just as there are times in relationships when the tension burns.

My years of singledom helped me gain ground on an appreciation of who I am, as I am and ultimately invoked a love from within that I previously always thought stemmed from being with someone else.

It's funny how people are drawn to that. For me, the new awareness I gleaned through this solitude planted seeds to finding the love of my life and starting a family, but that is far from the path for everyone.

Ultimately, it's amazing the love that manifests in your life in so many different forms when we're flying solo and we've learned to enjoy being up in the air.

I recently came across the Finnish term "sisu" which roughly translates as the fierceness & tenacity needed to sustain courage through adversity over a long period of time.

This idea really resonated with me and when I got a note from a customer with a pic of our 'Stay Positive' shirt, I felt it embodied this "sisu" state in both appearance and message. Here's the note...

"I bought one of your t-shirts in Toronto, probably a decade ago and it’s still holding up. It’s a little worse for wear, but I’m impressed it’s still in one piece. Thanks for the great design. I love what you have created and wanted to share that this is still going strong. :)"

There've been a lot of setbacks through three decades honing this t-shirt craft, but we've somehow hung around long enough to get really good at it.

In a world so often measured by quick wins, sometimes our ability to simply keep going long enough for our sisu spirit to shine is the only way through.

The unprecedented flooding in my adopted home state of Vermont is a stark reminder of the Hurricane Sandy experience that sent me north from Jersey to the Green Mountain state in the first place.
