Burnsville High School marketing student shares his experience working with a real business on a project

"Working with a real business on a real project made a huge difference, in what Burnsville High School marketing student AJ Kneisl learned but also in how meaningful the work was. It motivated him. It inspired him. That’s what Pathways is about, and partnerships are a big part of how we deliver it."

In her State of the District address on Aug. 9, Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle shared the experience of AJ Kneisl in a marketing class, where he and classmates created marketing plans for local businesses and organizations.

Hear from AJ in his own words!

Thanks to Burnsville High School business teacher Maggie Mayernik, who sought out a job in District 191 because of its core values, BHS is providing real-world experiences and hands-on opportunities for students in the Business Pathway. Because students have diverse interests and skills sets, these classes train our students in basic workplace competencies, including public speaking, collaboration and brainstorming, that they can use in any field. These skills and more are what industry leaders want from our graduates. Through business classes and Burnsville DECA, students are prepared to take the next steps in post-secondary settings, including the traditional college experience, training programs and the workforce.

A few weeks ago, Burnsville High School held its annual Culture Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the many cultures and traditions that make up its student body and community. The week culminated with a "Light Up the Night" celebration. "It makes you feel like you're a part of the community, no matter what color skin you are, no matter your culture, your religion." "It brings a sense of unity between all of us." Thanks goes out to all the students and staff involved with planning, organizing and managing Culture Week. Truly, it was a #CommunityStrong event that embraced and valued the cultural uniqueness of our community. ❤ #FutureReady #One91 https://youtu.be/WW4c1DkMwf4

Burnsville High School Symphonic Orchestra
Congratulations to the Burnsville High School Symphonic Orchestra, which was selected to play at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Midwinter Clinic at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Feb. 15. Burnsville High School is one of four high school orchestras state-wide to be selected to perform at this year's convention! 🎉 "Our selection to this event is on par with the football team winning the state tournament in achievement, but curricular in nature," said Scott Kosloski, BHS strings teacher and orchestra director. "I'm very proud of what these students have achieved." The One91 orchestra program is unique among south metro school districts and has grown steadily over the past several years. #FutureReady #CommunityStrong

District 191 encourages all families to apply for educational benefits
Even though meals are free for most students, we want to encourage all families to complete the new application for educational benefits, called the Alternate Application for Educational Benefits. By filling out the Alternate Application for Educational Benefits, families may qualify for additional benefits such as reduced or waived athletic and activities fees, reduced transportation fees, discounts on internet service, emergency food benefits, and much more. Filling out the Alternate Application for Educational Benefits also helps support District 191 schools, as some of the funding schools receive is determined by the number of families that qualify for benefits. By completing the form, families are helping ensure District 191 schools receive everything we need to support students, including additional funding for teachers, interventionists and other student supports. That’s why our goal is to have 100 percent of families complete this application. In partnership, thank you for helping us in our mission to make #EachStudent, #FutureReady and #CommunityStrong. For more details and to apply, visit https://www.isd191.org/families/application-for-educational-benefits.
