Last week, local businesses opened their doors to teachers from Burnsville High School for a teacher externship program, which connects classrooms to workplaces.
This was a chance for teachers to spend time in local businesses/industries and learn through direct experience about trends, skills requirements and the wide array of job opportunities.
We want to extend our gratitude to New Spaces, M Health Fairview, Collins Aerospace and City of Burnsville, Minnesota - Municipal Government for sharing their expertise, providing tours of their workplace and highlighting the skills they are looking for in our graduates.
โThe knowledge and understanding teachers gain from this experience can enrich their teaching and add relevance to student learning,โ said Kathy Funston, the districtโs director of strategic partnerships and pathways. โThis prepares teachers to share the WHY of whatโs being taught, not just the what.โ
We're just one week away from welcoming students back to school!

As part of their leadership training, leaders learned team-building activities and group leadership skills so that they would be able to facilitate groups of students on the very first day of school and in advisory classes throughout the year.

As part of her State of the District address on Aug. 9, Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle looked ahead and shared some initiatives planned for the coming school year, including a parent engagement series focused on student mental health and safe behavior, grant-funded work aimed at tackling attendance issues that have continued after the pandemic, and continued growth of the model in our elementary schools.
"So whatโs next, because we are not resting on our laurels. We Can Do Better. We Need to Do Better. We Will Do Better."

Fall athletics and activities are off to a great start, and it's a pleasure to see so many students pursuing their passions.
Students benefit in many ways from participation in athletics and activities. They learn teamwork, commitment and discipline. They gain confidence, make friends, acquire skills and contribute to their community. Students discover future careers and lifelong interests through their involvement. Most importantly, they learn so much about themselves.
If your student isn't registered and still wants to join a team, please contact the Burnsville High School Athletics Office for more information.

Thanks to our model, the opportunity to pluck the strings of a violin or cello is a no-strings-attached proposition for every fifth-grader in District 191! ๐ป
Those are just two of the many instruments students get the chance to play over the course of the year in Instrumental Music. The program, which started in the 2020-21 school year, gives each fifth-grader the opportunity to take 3-4 small-group lessons with instruments from each of the four orchestra instrument families - strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. ๐ช
This innovative approach provides access to instruments to students who might otherwise have financial or scheduling barriers, like having to purchase an instrument or rehearse before or after school. It also allows students to try out a variety of instruments before deciding what they want to play in middle school, where they have the opportunity to participate in band and orchestra.

"Working with a real business on a real project made a huge difference, in what Burnsville High School marketing student AJ Kneisl learned but also in how meaningful the work was. It motivated him. It inspired him. Thatโs what Pathways is about, and partnerships are a big part of how we deliver it."
In her State of the District address on Aug. 9, Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle shared the experience of AJ Kneisl in a marketing class, where he and classmates created marketing plans for local businesses and organizations.
Hear from AJ in his own words!

Today, Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle presented the State of the District in cooperation with the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce. Her presentation highlighted how partnerships with businesses, organizations, other governmental agencies and individuals have strengthened One91 schools and the entire community.
Through partnerships, for example, elementary students engaged in โจ "Spark Experiences" โจ with local and international music groups, learned simple tools used to build bird feeders, and created comic books with themselves as superheroes. Partnerships are an essential part of our Pathways model, opening the world to our students and sparking their curiosity and wonder.

A partnership between District 191 and the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce has strengthened pathways for students!
The Pathways model in District 191 has become a beacon for career and college readiness, setting a high standard for programming that allows students to spark, fuel and blaze a path toward self-discovery and success. A unique aspect of the program comes from the community in which it resides, with a variety of strong community partnerships including the Burnsville Business Education Network and the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce.
โTo have a chamber and chamber president who is so committed to the success of the district is incredible,โ said Kathy Funston, director of Strategic Partnerships & Pathways . โWe hope to be able to continue this for years and years to come.โ

Growing from its roots in the Family and Consumer Sciences department program, the BHS Culinary Pathway has expanded to 21 class sections a year, all of which are full of students eager to learn new skills.
Teacher Matt Deutsch was part of the initial creation of the Hospitality and Tourism Pathway and the inclusion of cooking classes. With years of experience as a teacher and having completed culinary school on the side, it was the perfect time and way to combine two of his passions.
โIt is really fun to be creative in a different way like cooking,โ said Deutsch. โStudents get excited about their work and really show pride in what they are making."
