I’m even more glad that I can speak outloud the things others can’t yet.

I had a hunch I wasn’t alone in 2020.

I’m SO glad I moved through this very uncomfortable process. Sharing all these years has NOT been easy. It has felt downright awful, shameful, and embarrassing at times. But I’m so glad I stayed.

I stayed.

I’ve learned throughout these years that part of healing is “staying”. One of the hardest things I’ve had to learn. Staying in discomfort. Staying in truth. Staying in moments of fear and doubt.

Staying.

It has allowed me to learn to live in the present moment and I’m so grateful for it.

I used to wear a mask every day. 🎭

I spent a majority of my adult life suppressing my childhood abuse. 👶🏽

It forced me to put a mask on and enter a trance. I walked around mindlessly attracting familiarity (the familiar things were NOT good). 😵‍💫

I spent my entire life being triggered everywhere I went and with most people I surrounded myself with - because I subconsciously chose familiarity. We all do this. Unknowingly. Until we wake up. 😳

If you knew me prior to 2020 - you never really knew me. I didn’t even know me. 🙋🏻‍♀️

I was fractured into pieces and I reserved my true soul for a time and space when it felt safe to let myself out. There were a few choice humans permitted in- it wasn’t many. 🛑

Sometimes people do this. Sometimes when you see their behavior - you’re only seeing one fractured piece of them. It’s never the whole story. 💔

I was a mindless addict from the time I started drinking alcohol at the age of 18. 🍺

In 2020 I did an experimental dry month and my eyes were opened forcibly to the lie I had been living my entire life. 🤥

I don’t care what you came from. Your addictive or reactive behavior is NOT “who you are” or your “personality”. It’s your suppressed trauma expressing itself - begging to be left OUT of you. 🛟.

There IS healing available but not without taking OFF the mask. The mask will stop protecting you at some point and it will aggressively work against you. It can present in depression, anxiety, and addiction (just to name a few examples). 😢

A year ago, I’d be busted up when I saw anyone exit my group Healing with Heather(that’s the link- you can click it and join). ❤️‍🩹

Now? I actually appreciate seeing exodus bc just like in my real life-

If people don’t want to be IN it? ❌

I want them OUT of it. 👋

I’m protecting my space y’all. It’s gonna be this way from here on out. This isn’t changing. This is me. 🥰

I value the hell out of myself. I’m so proud of myself for getting to where I am. I forgive myself and treat myself kindly. I know who I am and I know what I want and I won’t stop until I get it (well, I will rest and take breaks and siestas now and then bc I deserve to listen to my body 😉). I’m learning and growing every day. I also still make a lot of mistakes. I always will. 😌

I’m SO grateful…beyond grateful for anyone who

1. chooses to see my content. 👀
2. engages with my content. 📲
3. ignores my content. 🙈
4. silences my content. 🤫

Or best of all…

Every single negative experience or person you keep around holds energetic space. If you don’t get them out- that space is taken up. Think of it like occupancy in a hotel. There is no vacancy if all the rooms are taken up.🏨

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to live in a space with a bunch of people who bring really bad energy to me because they don’t like me or don’t find my value. Nope. No thank you. That s**t is palpable. And it legitimately holds your surroundings and brain hostage. ❌

The beauty of human life is we ALL have choices. Some people want to make you believe you have none. It’s a lie. This is YOUR life. 🌍

I’m choosing to live mine. And I’m SO grateful for anyone who chooses to share space with me because THAT is everything. ❤️‍🩹

I don’t use the @ “everyone” feature often in my group Healing with Heather.

Sometimes I do. Believe me I don’t abuse it like I’ve seen in some other groups I am in. EVERYONE here has a choice. Be here- interact and engage with the content. Read the content. Ignore the content. Silence the content. Exit the content.

This platform is the same as life. You always have a choice.

This is my group and if I choose to do that and you don’t like it?

The exit is one click away.

I had someone tell me to “Plz never use the @ everyone tag ever” and I showed him the way out.

I hope the door didn’t hit him as he so effortlessly disappeared and I doubt it did. If he doesn’t want to ever be tagged in anything I post, he shouldn’t be here. Period.

You think ANY real relationship with another wounded human is going to be easy?!?

It’s going to be a lot of damn work. If you’re being REAL.

Do you really think that there is any human in existence that isn’t wounded in some form or fashion?

Of course there isn’t. It doesn’t exist.

If you find someone authentic who wants to work through the s**t with you, you might want to keep trying. If you don’t recognize that the commitment they’ve made to you is a gift and one you should continue to open over and over again, you’ll struggle to resolve and heal the relationship. It’s true.

Love is a choice. It’s not a fairy tale. If BOTH parties are willing to stay committed, and their actions match that commitment, progress can be made.

None of it is easy. Ever. If you’re truly desiring authenticity in your relationships, you’ll probably be working harder to maintain them.

I’ll be clear: It requires 2 people. There are MANY relationships that should NOT continue based on habitual abuse patterns.

Some people will avoid their own shame so much that they’ll completely dismiss their child who has warranted feelings about the way they were raised.

Listen. You did your best. No doubt.

That’s what every parent does; the best they can with the skills they have. It’s true.

But if your child is sharing their feelings about how you’ve hurt them and you refuse to acknowledge those feelings and that pain?

Good luck healing that relationship.

Owning your part is imperative. Your shame suppression isn’t helping anything.

So I did something about it.

People walk around all the time smiling. No one around them knows what’s going on inside their minds or hearts. 💙

I’ve had tremendous and beautiful things happen for me in the way of continued progression for goals I’ve made for myself. 🙏

My Reiki business has begun. ☮️

I have my Occupational Therapy License back and I’m returning to a career I love in 2024. 👶

Good things. 😊

But what else I feel that no one sees is the black cloud around holidays that I wish would just leave me. And someday I hope it will. But it hasn’t. 💨

It’s there in reminders and old patterns. It’s there in the smells. The sounds. The sights of the holidays. Everywhere I go and every day leading up to the day is all a reminder. 🎄

I feel like I’m going through the motions right now and you know what…

Sometimes that’s what human life feels like. We do the damn best we can. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It can’t possibly be all joy. All happy smiles and light and love and positive vibes only. 🤢

Life is also god damn hard. 😓

And if you experienced a lot of childhood trauma specifically around holidays? Well, you might resonate with this post. 🙏

Creating NEW holiday pathways in your brain is going to take time. 🧠

Just like every step of this process. 🪜

It. Takes. Time. ⏰

I hope however you’re feeling this holiday season you remember this: it absolutely won’t always feel like this. It’s true for the good and the bad. 💝

Remember this.

You are not now- nor have you ever been- required to put YOUR mental health last this holiday season.

You CAN make the changes necessary to allow YOU to have more peace.

You’ll have to set aside how it affects others. It doesn’t mean you don’t love them. It doesn’t mean they aren’t good enough.

They’re perfectly imperfect. But they’re triggering YOU over and over and over again. And until you can figure out how to make that not happen????

You have to put YOUR mental health first. Trust me- they’ll find another person to trigger this holiday season. They don’t need you as badly as you think they do.

Life doesn’t need to be as difficult as we make it. I don’t judge.

Bc I’m human too.

The past weekend was challenging.

I was triggered a LOT in a short period of time.

I handled EVERY trigger with grace.

After the fact wasn’t as pretty.

I broke down for 2 days.

On the 3rd day I had 2 Reiki sessions. I concentrated really intently on shifting MY energy prior to my clients arriving.

I discovered something pretty amazing.

When I’m living in my passion- my energy shifts.

When I’m hiding in my house, when I’m avoiding human interaction, when I’m distracting myself from my purpose…I’ll continue to struggle.

Everything is energy.

Everything.

And when you can shift your energy- you can shift your thoughts.

I’ve had 5 or so sessions now and with every human I feel an entirely new perspective and experience. It’s been…in a word, beautiful.

Stuck and stored energy exists in all humans. The energy is held in the energy centers of our body- those are called chakras.

Energy centers being stuck or clogged (in other words, not processed) cause things like anxiety, depression and a slew of other physical and mental symptoms.

Since Friday morning at 1030 am, I’ve been triggered over and over again by multiple experiences- starting 1st with having to share intimate space with a person that looks and acts just like one of my abusers. And I’m going to have to get used to it. Apparently it’s not changing.

I’ve been on a tailspin since. And I’m trying to figure out how to forgive myself and move forward.

It’s so interesting to me to look back now.

I can think of a handful of people who absolutely turned their backs on me in these last few years. But this wasn’t a “new” trend. This was a repetitive pattern I found myself in; attracting people who would do exactly what was done to me in childhood.

Dismiss, neglect, abandon. Rinse and repeat.

These people never had my back. But for some reason I stayed loyal. I learned THAT dysfunctional pattern too- to be loyal to everyone no matter how much s**t they threw at me, no matter how much they made me beg to be their friend, no matter how much they judged me, no matter how AWFUL I felt every time I was around them. It was SO twisted.

I’m so grateful for their abandonment.

It has brought so much clarity to my life, and I know, without a shadow of a doubt that they weren’t meant to be in it any longer. I wish them the best. I wish them healing.

Two broken and wounded birds who find one another can’t fix each other. It usually ends with both birds falling out of the nest repetitively. Before you know it- both are blinded by the concussions.

I’m free.

You weren’t born with an insatiable desire or need to BE everything and DO everything.

You likely got conditioned to believe that “achieving” was the way your nervous system would receive soothing. It felt good when you got the accolades, the awards, and the recognition. It created a chemical response in your body. It was a dopamine response.

So for the rest of your life - you’ve spent your days trying to chase that feeling. That dopamine hit.

That feeling of winning. That feeling of being number 1. That feeling of being SEEN. That feeling of being HEARD.

Just because your caregivers were lovely and loving -doesn’t meant that mistakes and missteps weren’t made in your upbringing that brought you to this desperate place where you’re still trying to “be the best” all the time.

Too much dopamine can result in impulse-control issues. It can also stop being perceptible in your body bc it’s in an overflow state.

So if you feel like at this point, you cannot control your insatiable need to win and it’s effing up your body, your mind, and ultimately, your life… this is why.

But I believe- just as with ANY “chemical imbalance”…you can right it.

Take the 💊 - I’m not judging you. But the 💊 , while it may temporarily relieve you- will NOT HEAL the emotional or energetic root of your struggle. It will not HEAL the reason you landed here in the first place.

Ignoring the emotional, spiritual, and/or energetic roots will never HEAL a lifetime trauma response. Only getting to the root will.

When Mothers suppress their own childhood abuse and trauma with addiction, believe it or not...it works to PROTECT their child.

Had I gone through these last 3 years when she was THIS little? I would've traumatized her irreparably or perhaps maybe until she was a grown woman, like me. Because I couldn't've apologized for my actions...and I couldn't have explained any of it to her.

No one explained anything to me. Or apologized to me for their actions. And if they did apologize to me, it was followed up with the opposite and continued s**tty behavior, rendering their apologies useless and empty.

My addictions served to suppress the HELL I knew I would have to face if I wasn't shoving it down. And I shoved that s**t down FOR HER.

So the next time you want to judge a mother who is an addict? Think about me.

I loved my daughter and wanted my past to NOT exist so that I wouldn't hurt her with it. I did all of this on a subconscious level. And until I woke up to that, I couldn't wake up to it. You feel me?

EVERY Mother has a story, has a reason, and does the absolute best they can with the skills that they have.

I didn't have the skills to even attempt to face healing until 2020. And it turns out, that was exactly when I was supposed to begin. So that I could have my daughter be a part of all of it. So that I could explain my behavior to her on her level. So that I could apologize and change my behavior.

I am the same loving Mother now. But now I love me too. And wow, does that change Motherhood.
