Hi everyone,

I can’t believe I have to make this post, but I want to clear up some rumors regarding Butler's Grows on Main. A few people have asked about it, and I didn't think much of it, but yesterday, the freaking Post-Gazette called to inquire about our supposed closing in Butler and what our next steps would be.

I want to assure you that we are NOT closing the store. In fact, we are expanding! We will share more details as soon as some legalities allow us to make official announcements. We love being part of Butler Main Street, and our store is doing fantastic and we have zero plans of leaving. We absolutely LOVE our customers and community.

Here is this week’s🪴PLANT PROFILE🪴

The Alocasia Black Velvet, a slow-growing beauty with small, dark (almost black) foliage that has contrasting silver veins. As a lover of humidity, it is ideal for a steamy, bright bathroom.

Place near a north or east-facing window to ensure it receives gentle morning light. Use loose, well-drained potting soil and allow the top to dry a few inches before watering, which typically occurs about once a week.

Even in the healthiest of Alocasias, trimming away dead or dying foliage is a natural part of its maintenance. This will help promote new growth and direct nutrients effectively. Alocasias often produce individual corms, which can be propagated by placing them in shallow water and ensuring high humidity levels.

Alocasias prefer to be slightly rootbound, and considering their slow-growing nature, repotting is typically necessary only once every couple of years.

Lucky bamboo, a popular housewarming gift due to its reputation for bringing luck to the household. The plant comes in eye-catching shapes, swirls, or braided stalks, and is often used for good feng shui. Although it looks like bamboo and grows fast, it is actually a type of Dracaena.

According to Chinese traditions, the number of stalks in an arrangement has different meanings:
- Two stalks represent love.
- Three stalks represent happiness, wealth, and long life.
- Five stalks represent balance, peace, harmony, and power in all areas of life.
- Six stalks represent good luck and wealth.
- Seven stalks represent good health.
- Eight stalks represent growth.
- Nine stalks represent great luck.
- Ten stalks represent perfection.
- Twenty-one stalks represent a powerful blessing.

Notice the skip in #4? This is intentional, as the number four is associated with death in Chinese culture.

Lucky bamboo should be placed in indirect sunlight and rotated often to ensure even growth. Plant it in pebbles with water covering the roots (about an inch). Use distilled or pure spring water, or let tap water sit out for 24 hours before using. Change the water weekly to prevent diseases and odors.

Prune the plant to maintain its intricate shapes, and repot it when there is less than one inch of space between the stalks and the edge of the vessel.

Get ready for this week’s🪴PLANT PROFILE🪴

Eucalyptus, a favorite food of koalas 🐨 These evergreen trees can grow to nearly 60 feet high in their natural Australian environment. When planted in home gardens (Hardiness Zones: 8–11), they usually remain small at around 6 to 10 feet high. They feature silvery to blue-green leaves that give off the plant’s distinct menthol-like fragrance.

If you're growing eucalyptus plants indoors, it's best to keep them near a bright window, preferably one that faces south. Eucalyptus can tolerate most soil types but needs good drainage. These plants don’t like their roots to be disturbed, so it's best to start with a larger container to avoid having to repot.

Eucalyptus is somewhat drought-tolerant outdoors. However, indoors, it does not like to be left dry. Water when you feel dryness at your fingertip, which often amounts to watering weekly. It cannot survive prolonged exposure to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you're growing your plant in a container, bring it indoors when temperatures drop.

Eucalyptus can be propagated via cuttings, though it can be challenging. Cut a stem that’s around 5 inches long with four to eight leaves. Remove the leaves on the lower half. Dip the cut end in a rooting hormone, and then plant it in a pot of 3 parts tree bark to 1 part perlite. Keep in bright, indirect light, and make sure the soil remains lightly moist. Roots form in about a month.
