On January 11, 2016 Montana Tech Nursing made history for nursing at Tech again! The Nursing department began classes for their first class of 10 students in their new four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Montana Tech has graduated many great Registered Nurses over the years at the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) level and many have gone on to complete Tech's BSN completion program, however this is the first class that will actually graduate with their BSN when they complete degree, without having to obtain their ASN first and pass the N-CLEX licensure before continuing. The online BSN completion program will remain to serve the ASN'S in Montana desiring to obtain their BSN.

It is with great sadness that Montana Tech Nursing lost a relatively new nursing graduate. Jasper Caraway, 37, died peacefully in his sleep during the night on Saturday night/early Sunday morning from sleep apnea. Jasper was a kind soul who had a warm smile and happy "hello" for everyone. He had long dreamt of being a nurse and we're proud, as Montana Tech Nursing faculty, that we could help him realize his dream of becoming a registered nurse. Until we meet again....

For Immediate Release

MONTANA BOARD OF REGENTS APPROVE 4-YEAR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN NURSING AT MONTANA TECH

The Montana Board of Regents approved the offering of a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree on the campus of Montana Tech. With this approval, which took place today at the Board’s March meeting, Montana Tech joins Montana State University-Bozeman as the only two state-supported BSN programs in Montana.

Montana Tech’s Nursing Department spent over two years developing the program, which will require 120 credits including general education requirements.

“The Nursing faculty at Montana Tech worked diligently to get this program developed and authorized by the Board of Regents and Montana State Board of Nursing,” noted Dr. Doug Abbott, Montana Tech provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “The demand for BSN-educated nurses is increasing nationwide and I commend the Nursing Department and our statewide nursing colleagues for stepping up to the plate and getting this program approved. The citizens of Montana will benefit greatly from this new BSN program.”

The first group of BSN students will begin classes in the spring of 2016. In addition to the four-year degree, Montana Tech will continue to offer their online BSN–completion program for Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) graduates wanting to pursue their bachelor’s degree. The new BSN degree will replace the current ASN degree, which will graduate their final class in spring of 2017.

“The establishment of an entry-level baccalaureate degree at Montana Tech supports the academic goals of our students, improves employment opportunities, and is in line with recent clinical affiliates hiring policies,” said Karen VanDaveer, director of nursing at Montana Tech. “The Institute of Medicine’s report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011), established a goal that 80 percent of nurses be prepared at the baccalaureate level by 2020. The BSN at Montana Tech will help Montanans achieve this goal.”

“In a time where people are living longer, healthcare practices are constantly advancing, and medical technologies are evolving, bachelor prepared nurses are in demand,” VanDaveer added. “Montana Tech’s new program will produce the highly educated nurses that are needed to care for patients in this rapidly changing healthcare environment on the local, state, and national levels.”

The Student Nurse's Association (SNA) at Montana Tech is hosting a coat/winter apparel drive to benefit the patients being discharged from Montana State Hospital. We are trying to ensure that Montana State Hospital has enough winter wear for every patient being discharged into the cold Montana weather. "Warm Up Warm Springs" coat drive needs your unwanted, unneeded or brand new donations of adult size coats, gloves, stocking caps, heavy socks, thermal undershirts and pants, scarves, snow pants, coveralls......you name it! There are drop boxes around campus including the hallway in front of the nursing office in the Health Sciences Building. Help the SNA make winter a little warmer for those in need.

Congratulations to the next group of nursing students who received a clinical seat for this fall, 2014. The nursing curriculum is rigorous, that's true, but it will open the doors to a rewarding career. See you all this fall and CONGRATULATIONS-this was no small feat! Your work and perseverance has paid off!

Please welcome Cathy Westfall to our Nursing Department family. Cathy will be job sharing with Wilene for two days a week. Wilene (the bum!) has semi retired and is enjoying her extra days off with her husband (Jim), her children (Joey and Jenny) and her grandchildren. For those of you who have been working on prerequisites for awhile, you'll remember Cathy as the Nursing Department work study when we were located on the South Campus. Wilene will work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Cathy will work on Thursday and Friday. There may be a few exceptions to this schedule as time progresses. Give Cathy Westfall a warm welcome! (And wish Kim Davidson your best wishes, as she left our family at the end of June 😞).
