Healing with Hope
Are you a person who has been knocked off course by a recent diagnosis of critical illness? I am too! Dr. Marilyn-Healing with Hope
COVID-19 RELIEF
As an Epidemiologist, I have been providing two types of programs to help everyone during this ongoing distressing Pandemic
First, there is an exercise for stress reduction. There are 3 parts:
1-Experience Guided Imagery- to relax your body ( this is not religious in any way.)
2-Meditation- to relax your mind. ( Learn how to meditate specifically for you !)
3-(optional) Pray
Love this! Makes my day!
Maybe yours too!
Thanks again Kathy Kelly
Sunrise- as Cathy Kelley, the great videographer says, a nudge to pause take a deep breath and reflect !
Maybe it will help you, too, in the same way!!!
Great white Heron I believe!

PAIN and I-
Over last weekend, our 35 yo visiting daughter suggested a movie we might watch, “ Bone Tomahawk, starring Russell Crowe, one of my favorites. ( Very bizarre movie.)
As the Sheriff, he says, “Pain is how your body talks to you!”
That certainly resonated with me.
Six years ago, after my long, disfiguring surgery for cancer, my pain was unrelenting. It was made worse by a massive Pseudomomas wound infection with green pus everywhere. Back to the OR for “wash out”. Abscess. Wound vacuum. And so on, and on.
I was unable to finish my chemotherapy/radiation treatments after I developed diarrhea, could hardly eat, and finally my white blood cell count dropped to next to nothing (2.0).
My daughter came to San Francisco Airport where she picked me up and we flew back to North Carolina. My husband didn’t recognize me except that Gillian was pushing the wheelchair.
I went to a pain clinic, where the only medicine that helped was a morphine derivative called Dilaudid. Just as I had told my patients, I was reassured that as long as I took it Only for Pain, I would not become addicted. And that was true.
Eventually I could taper down to codeine, and finally Naprosyn, Advil or Tylenol, or ice, that I take today, depending on the pain level and its location.
I have come to terms with Pain. I always have pain. Pain is my Constant Companion.
I have adapted to live with it.
But Pain does Not Define Me.
I am still Me-I still practice my Life Mission of Helping Others.
I accept and deal with Pain.
Pain is Not Who I Am.
(I am fortunate, as not every has this pain type of story.)

To follow up - I truly enjoyed my practice in my own office. If issues come up, you can enact the changes; if positive comments are made, you can take credit.
That only occurs when the office is your own.
I knew I needed to learn how to say I had done enough on any given day, and go home to be with my family.
I even asked a very good friend, psychologist, who had me set a timer after hours and, at least, stand up behind my desk, to stop my intense concentration, and recognize what time it was!
However, it’s only been decades later that I finally understand what I have been told , over and over: in order to fully help others , first you must help yourself - take good care of yourself- and EVEN Love Yourself!!!
This last one, the very hardest for me and what I wrote about in my last email!
Finally I understand!
I give myself time to eat good food -
Time to exercise-water is my friend
Time to read -
Time to reconnect with friends on the telephone -
And- the very hardest- to get adequate sleep- 😴 I am intrinsically a night person- staying up till 3 or even 4:30 a few days ago, is normal. Maybe, too, from my childhood where my Mom made me go to bed at 7:30 PM, while other kids were outside playing! So it’s just because I CAN!
But I’m allowing myself to
“sleep in” when that occurs.
Not easy, this self-love, as many of you may know, but when we make this part of our day, it’s much appreciated by family , friends, and patients/clients, as well!
Aloha- means “Hello” “Goodbye” and/or
“I love you”😘
