This Friday March 8, at 9:30am, Boston in Transit proprietor Steven Beaucher will give a virtual tour of the exhibition “Getting Around Town: Four Centuries of Mapping Boston in Transit” at the Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library. The tour, which will run about 45 minutes, will be livestreamed on the Leventhal’s YouTube channel. (It will also be recorded for later viewing.)

Steven is the Guest Curator of this expansive, visually engaging presentation of maps and other navigation devices used by Bostonians over four centuries. Rare and seldom seen maps are complemented by photographs, ephemera, guidebooks, and other transit artifacts. The exhibit, on view through April 27, is free and open to the public.

The exhibit is drawn largely from Steven’s book, “Boston in Transit: Mapping the History of Public Transportation in The Hub,” reissued last spring by MIT Press. This landmark full-color volume comes in at nearly 600 pages, and features 1000 images, from period photographs and engraved views to antique maps, blueprints, train schedules, tickets, and other ephemera. It is available via the link below and at fine bookstores everywhere.

This bird's eye view map was originally produced in 1936 to celebrate the tercentenary of Harvard University. The print being offered is a high-quality facsimile produced in the 1980s. We have a limited number of these like-new prints. Map is printed onto heavy-weight, ivory-color paper stock. This facsimile was not produced by WardMaps LLC. As such, it does not utilize our papers/inks. This vintage item is as found, but in excellent/perfect condition.
