In Hana, Hawaii, around 72% of the population is of native descent, yet about 82% speak only English. That’s why Ma Ka Hana Ka 'Ike provides native students with education in various cultural practices through ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language).
“It's an honor to be able to grow up and live where we're from where connection to land is still alive, yet, it's something that we have to advocate for,” says Lipoa Kahaleuahi, 2023 Solver and executive director of the program.
