Green Streets Initiative is a Cambridge, MA-based organization, founded in 2006. Our mission is to help employers, neighborhoods, and cities improve the overall health and vibrancy of their communities and the greater populace through the promotion of environmentally-friendly modes of travel such as walking, bicycling, and public transportation. We produce interactive webpages that present qualita
Meet George, our wonderful Development and Outreach Manager. George recently received his Master’s of Public Health, and is set to start a doctoral program in the fall. On his reasons for becoming part of the team, he says, “I joined GSI in an effort to promote environmental and individual health through active transport.” In his spare time, George loves to be active: going to the gym, walking around the city, and hiking. He and his wife, Kirsten, have a pet Maine C**n, Nanners. This kitty weighs a whopping 22 pounds!
How does the GSI team vacation? By biking and on public transit, of course! Volunteer Lizzie traveled to Chicago, where she biked down to Navy Pier and checked out the L train. Upon arriving in the city, she took the blue line from O’Hare—an easy way to travel downtown. Other than Boston, which city do you find has the best public transit?
Summer is the perfect time to take a Bluebikes for a spin around the city. Don’t forget your helmet!
GSI Volunteer Lizzie takes us along on her walk at Jamaica Pond. Where are your favorite walking spots in Boston?

Our videos and analyses enable organizations and government agencies to better understand why people in their communities commute in “car-light” ways - whether they are “under the bike helmet,” in the carpool, or at the bus stop - and what the obstacles are for people who would like to join them.

What Moves Frisoli Youth Center Youth value the autonomy they have when using public transit and biking, and appreciate the ability to socialize on transit and to not be limited to whatever number will fit in a car. They also value looking at their surroundings and being able to space out.

A former team member at Green Streets and a recent UMass Amherst graduate, Harry is now bringing a What Moves Us project to the Cambridge Health Alliance as their Alternative Transportation Intern! This week, we are hearing from our summer intern, Zakkai, as part of our What Moves Green Streets series! A Revere, Massachusetts native and incoming sophomore at Haverford College, Zakkai reflects on his experiences riding the Blue Line his whole life, and his recent uptake of cycling at Haverford. He says that Boston’s buses and trains are a great option for all commuters, especially those impacted by the Sumner Tunnel closure. Listen to Zakkai talk about how the Blue Line is free this summer and how Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA staff at Blue Line stations have been so welcoming to new and returning riders!
Zakkai’s snippet is an example from our larger What Moves Us campaign, which shares the voices of all travelers in the community and inspires others to try different transportation modes – from cycling to walking to the MBTA and everything in between – that will lead to happier and healthier communities. Let us help you by creating a What Moves Us storyboard for your organization or community, that can be viewed internally or open to the public! See the links below:

Want to learn more about “What Moves Green Streets Staff?” You’re in luck! This video features our staff member Shannon Sullivan! An MPA student at Northeastern University, Shannon credits her proficiency in bus and train travel to her time at Providence College, where she often commuted with Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA Commuter Rail. She further utilized the bus and subway upon starting her graduate program. Growing up in Western Mass, Shannon says her newfound love for the train, bus, walking, and carpooling stems from the independence and relaxation they bring. Learn more in this 2-minute video!

What do you think could be done to make MA and our cities change our ways and move to being in the vanguard? Or even... average?
Cities need better public transit, less driving, new international report says. That makes Mass. a laggard, not a leader. - The Boston Globe Urban areas will have to look more like Leipzig, Germany, where cars are a rare sight in the city center, and electric trams whisk people from here to there.
Meet our new summer intern, Zakkai Mares-Van Praag, who is excited to work with Green Streets and engage directly with commuters!
It’s so interesting to see how someone’s nature as well as where they grow up, go to school, work and play all influence one’s directions in life. In Zakkai’s case, we are grateful that their (obsessive?!) love for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA, growing up in Revere, Massachusetts, attending The Advent School, Brimmer and May School, and now Haverford College, and having worked at The Food Project, Community Action Works, and Revere’s Housing Stability Office, have led him to us for this summer!

This past Saturday, hundreds of people rallied together to advocate for the closing of Memorial Drive on Saturdays and Sundays. Mem. Drive had been closed both days in the past for pedestrian usage, but the Department of Conservation and Recreation recently changed the closure days to only Sunday, even though the majority of community members opposed this decision. Read more about the fantastic efforts of residents (including Green Streets Founder, Janie Katz-Christy) to keep this wonderful community resource open!
