Chestnut Street Baptist Church - Camden, Maine

http://www.chestnutstreetbaptist.org Do you know what’s really special about us here at Chestnut Street Baptist Church? Nothing! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

If you are looking for a perfect church then you are going to be very disappointed with us. At CSBC you’ll find real people, with real problems, who live real lives, and are all learning to love a real God whose grace is more than enough for all our needs. You see, at CSBC we don’t need to cling to our own “special-ness” or “goodness” because of the cross of Jesus Christ. At His cross we find that

Camden issues 24-hour parking ban with Sunday winter storm on the approach 01/05/2024

Camden issues 24-hour parking ban with Sunday winter storm on the approach There will be a winter parking ban for all streets and parking lots in Camden, except for the Public Safety lot on Washington Street, from 6 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 7, to 6 a.m., Monday, Jan. 8. “We understand a daytime ban could be less than ideal, but...

👉 To accomplish this, God designed us with the ability to engage in a mutual “exchange of information” using a variety of verbal and nonverbal modes of communication—words, eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, and so on. Research has shown that at the very best, words provide no more than half of what is communicated in a relationship.

Also, intimacy requires us to experience the nuances between oneself and others. When your teenager verbally agrees to go to her room and do her homework, but rolls her eyes at the same time, she is telling you something—and that something is that she will do what you ask, but you are a lame person for requesting it. When you have a meeting with your team at work and one person is giving the right answers but sighing the whole time, he may be communicating how unnecessary he thinks this meeting is.

So more information exchange on multiple levels means a greater probability of intimacy. And that means you can now probably see some of the limitations of the digital world. Communication technology is often helpful, but it can never be the gold standard of relationship building.

A few years ago, I was trimming the hedges around the church and ended up in the ER because of these guys (Bald Face Hornets). And today, I was reminded why I trim late fall or very early spring. This was a HUGE nest just noticed today right next to the side entrances.

No worries - all these hornets are gone and in Florida till spring!

Weeping for Our Children, Sherry Sherwood, My Morning Coffee

“”Then you took your sons and daughters—the children you had borne to me—and sacrificed them to your gods. Was your prostitution not enough? Must you also slaughter my children by sacrificing them to idols?" – Ezekiel 16:20-21

Satan continues to lead nations in the practice of child sacrifice. His methods are different but the end result is the same — babies are being sacrificed for the sake of convenience…”

"'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'" - Key Life 12/22/2023

Why have you forsaken me?

…the Psalms where we’ve been looking at are addressing the suffering of threat and pain and wondering about God’s faithfulness and crying out for deliverance. And these are important because we have a tendency to theologically edit our suffering and find a way to call it certain things, like well it’s my cross to bear and I really must deserve it, as if God is just looking for a reason to do some karma on us. Or we’re worried that we’re somehow a bother that God’s got more important things to do than deal with, you know, my negative emotions that don’t look like faith and seem more like doubt.

Human suffering in the midst of a world created by a compassionate and loving God is a dimension of human experience that is disturbing. Easy answers and platitudes cannot speak to the answer for the why, but perhaps the cross can, because whatever pain and suffering your experiencing right now, Jesus has also faced. He knows intimately the depth of desperation you are feeling, but his suffering was not the last word on him, resurrection is.

Only one week from this Sunday - hard to believe! Go - invite someone!

👉 Before smartphones and the internet, you were reachable only “at work” or “at home,” meaning there were real places that physically separated your work space and time from your personal space and time. “Time” and “space” were the natural and default boundaries that protected you. After your work time was done, you were “off”—you left work at the workplace, went home, and did whatever else you wanted, protected from work by time and space.

The same natural boundaries also applied to relationships and activities outside of work. If extended family, friends, or neighbors wanted to communicate with you, they had to ring a doorbell, call you on the phone, or even write you a letter and (gasp) wait several days for it to reach you. You were protected naturally by the boundaries of both time and space. But no longer.

And so far, we have just talked about work and personal time. But this breach of boundaries goes further than that. Even within work or your personal life, people can reach you directly who used to have to go through some sort of channel to do that.

So, what does all this mean? Something very important: boundaries on technology and social media are now entirely up to you.

You Can Do the Right Things in Ministry—and Still Fail 12/05/2023

A powerful reminder…

“His kingdom cannot fail.” But mine might.

I was reading the story of the rich young ruler. He asks Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” If you know the story, Jesus enumerates several of the Ten Commandments. The young man responds, “I’ve kept them all—what else?” Jesus’s response is terrifying: “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.””

You Can Do the Right Things in Ministry—and Still Fail The old hymn is true: “His kingdom cannot fail.” But mine might.
