Here are a few safety tips to ensure your loved one is safe in their own home -
General Home Safety Tips - Move furniture to create clear walking paths, improve overall lighting in the home (light dark pathways or countertop areas with easy-to-install rope lighting, add task lights and night lights wherever needed), remove loose carpeting and unnecessary throw rugs.
Kitchen Safety Tips - keep a long handled grabber in the kitchen to reach objects that may be out of reach, move frequently used items from high shelves and under-the-counter cabinets to more accessible locations.
Bathroom Safety Tips - Install grab bars for additional support while toileting and while getting into and out of the shower, consider installing a comfort height toilet.
Bedroom Safety Tips - Adjust the height of the bed. A senior should be able to sit on the edge of the bed with their knees bent and their feet flat on the floor. It it's too high, consider removing or replacing the box spring with a low-profile box spring or purchasing a lower bedframe.

“𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, I’d like my family to hang this wish list up on the wall where I live. I want them to remember these things.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, I want my friends and family to embrace my reality. If I think my spouse is still alive, or if I think we’re visiting my parents for dinner, let me believe those things. I’ll be much happier for it.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, don’t argue with me about what is true for me versus what is true for you.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and I am not sure who you are, do not take it personally. My timeline is confusing to me.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and can no longer use utensils, do not start feeding me. Instead, switch me to a finger-food diet, and see if I can still feed myself.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and I am sad or anxious, hold my hand and listen. Do not tell me that my feelings are unfounded.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, I don’t want to be treated like a child. Talk to me like the adult that I am.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, I still want to enjoy the things that I’ve always enjoyed. Help me find a way to exercise, read, and visit with friends.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, ask me to tell you a story from my past.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and I become agitated, take the time to figure out what is bothering me.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, treat me the way that you would want to be treated.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, make sure that there are plenty of snacks for me in the house. Even now if I don’t eat I get angry, and if I have dementia, I may have trouble explaining what I need.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, don’t talk about me as if I’m not in the room.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, don’t feel guilty if you cannot care for me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s not your fault, and you’ve done your best. Find someone who can help you, or choose a great new place for me to live.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and I live in a dementia care community, please visit me often.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, don’t act frustrated if I mix up names, events, or places. Take a deep breath. It’s not my fault.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, make sure I always have my favorite music playing within earshot.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, and I like to pick up items and carry them around, help me return those items to their original places.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, don’t exclude me from parties and family gatherings.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, know that I still like receiving hugs or handshakes.
𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒹𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶, remember that I am still the person you know and love.”

Happy Lunar New Year!! 🐉
The staff at California Seniors Care truly care about our clients and caregiving staff. The majority of us have gone through or are currently dealing with family members who are aging. Some of them have illnesses that require additional care and we just want them to live the happiest life they can. It’s not just a job for us but a way to show our empathy and compassion for those who are in need, because we know and understand. We Care!
Eventually, your parents become older. They become sick, weak and frail. With their conditions come the need for more attention, more love, more understanding, and more importantly, quality elderly care. While you as a child or relative can care for your elders, often, the challenge can be huge as you juggle caregiving with your own family, life, and career. Caregiving for the elderly can be a demanding task, and you can find yourself torn between your own needs and those of the elderly you’re caring for.
While elderly care can be difficult with its many dem
ands, it is still important to provide them with what they deserve for their own health, safety, and well-being.
Here are 10 reasons why you should care for your elderly loved ones.
If you sometimes find it hard to care for your elderly loved ones because you have your own family and job to occupy you, you can seek help from quality care giving agencies. Here are a few reasons why you should provide them with the best elderly care:
1. They are your parents. They raised you, made sacrifices for you and the family all these years to make sure you grown up to be the person that you are. You need to provide them with the best care because they deserve it. They cared for you and now they’re the ones who need you.
2. They love you. As you grown, your elderly parents were there every stop of the way. Through your fumbles and triumphs, they have loved you unconditionally. You owe it to them and to yourself that they are in good hands and that you show your love in return by caring for them or providing them the same care they have shown you.
3. They made sacrifices for you. From the moment your mother carried you in her womb, until you grew up to be who or what you are today, your parents have definitely made sacrifices to make sure you are in good hands. Do the same for them by providing them quality elderly care at home or in adult daycare facilities such as Big Hearts.
4. Show you appreciate them. Caring for them and attending to their needs is one of the many ways you can show that you love and appreciate them.
5. Heritage. Your elders are part of your family and they can impart traditions and ideals that have been integral to your family’s history and your own personal identity.
6. Learn from them. They have been through things you can’t imagine. Throughout the years, they have weathered the many storms of life, and from here you can find precious life lessons. Therefore, take the time to heed what they say and learn from their lives.
7. They need a sense of belonging. Providing them good elderly care by yourself or with the help of professionals stops them from feeling isolated and depressed. You help continue to provide them a sense of community, a social life, that empowers and energizes them.
8. Gain insight into their values. They lived through a time where the value system is different from yours. By spending time talking to them and get to know their history, you can gain insight into how they lived, how life was in their times, and learn values that you can also apply to your generation.
9. They need to feel a sense of purpose. Part of properly caring for your elderly loved ones is providing them with a sense of purpose so they will always look forward to the days ahead of them instead of being filled with dread or uncertainty.
10. They are nearing the end. Let’s face it, sooner or later, with their age, the future becomes more uncertain. This can take a toll on their physical and mental health. Make them live out the rest of their lives feeling happiness and at peace as well as feeling loved and cared for.
Bonus reason:
It’s simply the right thing to do. As a human being, it’s just right that you care for your elders. After all, you are soon going to become one too. By caring for your elders, you show your own humanity and simply do what is right.
Those moments when we have to say "goodbye" When we watch and wait and stay present, because if we blink we may miss something. It never gets easier. We understand it is a part of life but it still brings incredible sadness. This is a comment from our beloved client's family member about our dedicated and incredible care staff. -- Good morning, I'm sorry to say I don't think we'll be needing Julian after all. Dad has transitioned to being in bed full time and is sleeping most of the day. Only one person is required, because we're no longer transferring him.
We were very pleased with Julian last Sunday. He was kind, very knowledgeable, and gentle with Dad. When Julian was saying goodbye, Dad said, "You are welcome to come back anytime."🥹
Meet Madam Jeanne Louise Calment, who had the longest confirmed human lifespan: 122 years, 164 days. Apparently, fate strongly approved of the way she lived her life. She was born in Arles, France, on February 21, 1875. The Eiffel Tower was built when she was 14 years old. It was at this time she met Vincent van Gogh. "He was dirty, badly dressed, and disagreeable," she recalled in an interview given in 1988.
When she was 85, she took up fencing, and still rode her bike when she reached 100. At the age of 114, she starred in a film about her life, at age 115 she had an operation on her hip, and at age 117 she gave up smoking, having started at the age of 21 in 1896. She didn't give it up for health reasons; her reason was that she didn't like having to ask someone to help her light a cigarette once she was nearly blind.
In 1965, Jeanne was 90 years old and had no heirs. She signed a deal to sell her apartment to a 47-year-old lawyer called André-François Raffray. He agreed to pay her a monthly sum of 2,500 francs on the condition he would inherit her apartment after she died. However, Raffray not only ended up paying Jeanne for 30 years, but then died before she did at the age of 77. His widow was legally obliged to continue paying Madam Calment until the end of her days.
Jeanne retained sharp mental faculties. When she was asked on her 120th birthday what kind of future she expected to have. Her reply, "A very short one."
Here are the Rules of Life from Jeanne Louise Calment:
"I'm in love with wine."
"All babies are beautiful."
"I think I will die of laughter."
"I've been forgotten by our Good Lord."
"I've got only one wrinkle, and I'm sitting on it."
"I never wear mascara; I laugh until I cry often."
"If you can't change something, don't worry about it."
"Always keep your smile. That's how I explain my long life."
"I see badly, I hear badly, and I feel bad, but everything's fine."
"I have a huge desire to live and a big appetite, especially for sweets."
"I have legs of iron, but to tell you the truth, they're starting to rust and buckle a bit."
"I took pleasure when I could. I acted clearly and morally and without regret. I'm very lucky."
“Being young is a state of mind, it doesn’t depend on one’s body. I’m actually still a young girl, it's just that I haven't looked so good for the past 70 years."
At the end of one interview, the journalist said, "Madame, I hope we will meet again sometime next year." To which Jeanne replied, "Why not? You're not that old; you'll still be here!”

At California Seniors Care, we pride ourselves on recruiting the best caregivers around. Our caregivers must have a minimum of two years experience with another agency or hospital organization. They are also required to have a current Home Care Aide (HCA) registration number through the Department of Social Services (DSS). In order to obtain an HCA, the caregiver must also submit a live scan (finger prints) to obtain clearance from DSS. One additional requirement we have is that all caregivers have a current TB test.
We'd like to introduce you to some of our caregivers....
Benefits of Home Health Care - Home health care keeps older adults who are recovering from injuries or managing acute or chronic health conditions where they want to be -- at home. There are several other benefits of home health care, here are just a few:
Greater Independence - Older adults may not admit they're struggling because they don't want to lose their independence. One of the benefits of home health care is that it helps older adults continue doing everyday tasks like walking, bathing, dressing and preparing meals. This way they can live independently at home as long as possible.
Relief for Family Caregivers - The benefits of home health care also extend to family caregivers. Home health aides can help with bathing, dressing and other daily tasks. This relieves some of the burden on family caregivers. The home health team can also educate family members about how to provide follow-up care and connect them with helpful resources. This type of support provides peace of mind and protects against caregiver burnout.
Personalized Care - They receive one-on-one attention and a care plan that is tailored to their specific needs. This makes treatment more effective and builds trust among the patient, caregiver and home health care team.
Companionship - In addition to receiving visits from the home health care team, it's easier for friends and relatives to visit elderly loved ones in their home than in the hospital or at a facility. With no time restrictions or set visiting hours, they get more social interaction. This combats loneliness and brings families together.

One of the most difficult decisions you'll make in life is choosing a senior living or care provider for a loved one.
Not every adult requires the level of care that a nursing home provides. There are many options. At California Seniors Care we offer services like: Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), Companion Care and social support, Medication reminders and health monitoring, Light housekeeping and meal preparation.
These services aim to support seniors' basic care needs as well as their social, mental, and physical being in a holistic manner.

Last night, SCFD’s Station 2 crew answered a knock on the station door to these two young men who did the right thing when they found six abandoned puppies in a plastic bin. The plastic bin was left on the side of the road and closed with a plastic lid, in the area of Scott Lane Elementary School. The two friends drove to multiple vet offices only to find them closed and finally decided to take the pups to Station 2. The crew called Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority who responded promptly and are getting the pups the care they need. Thank you to these young folks for helping! The temperature had dropped significantly with the sunset, and we are certain that their decision to act and find help created a positive outcome for the pups!
