Second Glance, Second Chance
I was seen today. I was given a second chance at life because I was seen. As a motorcyclist, most are familiar with the saying “ride like no one sees you”. It’s something I have put into practice for as long as I can remember.
But no matter how great we ride, how cautious we are, how much we plan for the worst, sometimes none of it is enough. We still must rely on the drivers we share the roads with to do their part as well. Therein lies the biggest problem. Each year hundreds of lives are taken prematurely because the driver of the other car couldn’t see the rider.
I have had my fair share of close calls and near misses, thankfully without too much wear and tear. Some of it, skill; some of it, dumb luck. Today, though, was different. While cruising down a jam-packed interstate in Metro Detroit this afternoon, I found myself in the center of three lanes moving eastbound about 75 mph, with cars on both sides of me in their lanes. The only one who had room to advance happened to be me as there was no one directly in front of me.
Knowing that I never like to be “sandwiched” between vehicles, I twisted the throttle to accelerate a little bit and clear the cars on both sides. I noticed the white Ford Fusion to my left seemed to be growing impatient with the driver in front of her for not going fast enough. As I sped up and was at the rear passenger side door of this Fusion, I saw the front blinker turn on and simultaneously, the car was already moving into my lane.
I had nowhere to go, but as I started to slow and maneuver to the right side of my lane, I saw the young female driver look over her right shoulder again and she saw me. Though I have a mirrored visor, it appeared we made eye contact, and she moved back into her lane. This simple action on her part no doubt saved me today. She didn’t just “go through the motions” and turn her head. She purposefully turned and looked before continuing to move over.
She wasn’t driving erratically, and she didn’t even have her phone in her hand. She started to make a mistake; a mistake that likely would have killed me, and she corrected herself.
As I rode past her for good, I waved and gave her a thumbs up as a thank you. (Man was I thankful!) She seemed to understand, and I motored on. I wish I knew who she was so I could personally praise her for being alert and purposeful in her driving. All I can hope is that someone reads this and makes it a new habit behind the wheel.
Today was a “Second Glance, Second Chance” experience for me. It came to me shortly after that and now it will be what reverberates through my head when I’m on the road. Ride safe, drive safe, and please, give everyone a second glance. You might be the only reason they get a second chance.
Please share and if possible, let's make it popular: Second Glance, Second Chance.
From small business to small business, I’ve got to give a huge shoutout and thank you to Dave at HD Cycle Service in Waters, MI. Last Friday, I ran over a piece of metal in the road I couldn’t avoid and sliced open my rear tire. Thankfully I was able to get pulled over and off the road. Friends contacted Dave to see if he could get me in for a tire replacement and he got the job done. So thankful for Dave, as well as Steve and Teresa Erwin for helping me trailer the bike to Dave. Took a ton of stress off me being a few hundred miles from home. If you’re in northern Michigan and need bike service, get ahold of Dave. He took great care of me in a pinch.
Our lead man volunteered his time this past weekend to help the DYSUN team raise awareness and money for victims of distracted driving while also helping Bucket List Dreams for Veterans with their cause as well.
*peep that Head Case Hoodie he’s wearing.
And we love it.
