Civility
noun
formal politeness and courtesy in behavior or speech.
"I hope we can treat each other with civility and respect"
Golden Rule:
Treat others as you wish to be treated.
I truly enjoy a conversation with anyone regarding our thoughts and opinions on any subject matter. I truly believe when we listen to one another and we politely, even passionately, express our opinions, great ideas, thoughts and solutions can be achieved.
When someone begins to tear down the other, calls the other names, the respect and civility of the conversation is lost.
It is at this point, I just listen and keep my mouth shut.

$29,000 per space
This picture is a parking space in the new downtown Canton parking deck next to City Hall. Written in chalk is $29,000 per space.
That price tag is actually low. Researching online, the Cherokee tribune and the Canton government website listed that the cost of the parking lot at the start of the build was $2.9 million. The $2.9 million was used to create a parking deck with 102 parking spaces. Prior to the parking deck, the lot could park approximately 30 vehicles. I was informed that the actual cost was closer to $7 million, but was unable to find any information online to back that number up.
In the initial proposal for the parking deck, the parking deck was to be modular so that it could add additional stories in the future. During the build that was changed, and it was capped at the second story, as to not block the windows of City Hall. It cannot be built on further without major changes.
Cherokee County is building a 400+ parking deck behind the white marble building on North Street between that building andthe cemetery. Three years ago, Cherokee County had a proposal to purchase the property that currently is home to the apartments just prior to our courthouse, relocate the current residents, and build the parking lot there. That plan was opposed by our mayor and city council. If that plan had been allowed to proceed, the parking deck by City Hall would not have been necessary.
Just another example of overspending and misuse of funds.

At the city Council meeting on September 28, 2023, two Canton residents spoke on possible ways to spend some excess money that was collected by the city, $1.5 million. Additionally, one of the residents requested that the City Council and Mayor taking an additional week to think about how to spend the money instead of voting later on in the meeting.
The suggestions by the two residents were addressed, and when the vote came later in the meeting, only Mr. Waterman voted to listen to the residents to wait one week and voted against the action suggested by the finance Director.
There was no immediate reason for the decision to be made on the 28th. In fact, the finance Director said they could wait until March to make a decision. The council, however, voted to approve the action that was proposed by a 4-1 margin, Mr. Waterman being the dissenting vote.
The mayor and council failed to listen to the residents once again.
Is this the type of council and Mayor that you want here in Canton?

Are you aware that the "Coolest Small Town in America" will NOT be considered a small town in less than 5 years?
I researched the criteria for a small town yesterday. On some sites, Canton is already NOT a small town.
The consensus appears to be 50,000. Canton is currently estimated at 33-35,000. Our growth is predicted to be 55-60,000 in the next 5 years ELIMINATING Canton from small town status.
Our current Mayor touts a 15 year growth plan which he stated in January at the city council meeting was 70% completed in the first 2 years of the plan.
So you tell me,
Are We growing too quickly?

In a little over a month and a half, it will be time to decide which way Canton is going. Do you want to continue to explode in growth without having infrastructure in place, while the current government continues to build its empire, or do you want to affect change.
If you have moved here to get out of the big cities, or even the medium size cities, it’s time to rain in the local government.

There are a number of issues I want to address.
1. Strategic growth for Canton. More infrastructure before building so much the whole city looks like Exit 19 off 575 or downtown Woodstock.
2. Trim the budget. The city budget has more than doubled in the past 4 years under the current mayor. $42 million and some change in 2019 to $88 million and some change in 2022.
Additionally, the independent auditor that audited the budget stated that 11 million was not allocated for the 2022 budget. The Mayor and Council could have helped all the residents by lowering Cantons millage rate for property taxes or by providing a rebate. Instead, they kept it to spend on art projects and other frivolous ideas during this poor economic time.
3. Effect laws that the City Council and Mayor cannot bid on City projects while serving nor can they get a job with the City for 18 mths after leaving office.
I want to listen to all Canton residents and provide solutions that help all of us.
Canton, GA Residents
Did you know?
Veterans in Canton and Cherokee Co. are receiving zero help from the Federal, State and Local governments. The majority of funds for Veterans at the State and Federal level are being distributed in the metropolitan City of Atlanta.
Our local Veterans, especially the disabled Veterans, need help in with mental health issues, housing and transportation to list a few.
Disabled Vets receive a $3500/mth check. Due to regulations from Covid, the monthly income to qualify for a house is a 3 to 1 ratio. That means if the rent/mortgage on a home is $1600/mth, the qualifyier needs at least $4800/mth in income.
THIS IS MORALLY WRONG to treat our servicemen and servicewomen this way. They fought for our freedoms, our beliefs. It's time we stand up for them.
When ELECTED Mayor this Nov 7th., I pledge my time in office will be to help find support for our Veterans here in Canton, attend as many Veterans meetings as possible and to provide no less than quarterly updates on what the City of Canton is doing to address and help our Veteran Community.
As the son of a Colonel in the Marine Corp (served 29 years) and nephew to a number of Uncles whom also served, Veterans are near and dear to my heart. It is disgraceful how our local, state and federal governments support our Veterans.
I am asking for your vote, this Nov. 7th, 2023.

Did you know that only 10% of Canton residents vote in the municipal elections?
Don't throw away your voice in the local elections. Governance of the people begins right here in Canton, close to home. If we fail to tell our local government what we want, how much more difficult is it to express ourselves at a State/Federal level.
Let's change that starting this year - 2023.

It's Time! Yesterday, I completed the registration process, paid the entry fee and am now officially a candidate for Mayor of Canton.
If you want:
⦁ Strategic growth, infrastructure first
⦁ Trimmed budget (increased 40 million, more than doubled, in past 4 years
⦁ Property tax millage rates lowered further or possible rebates when millions of dollars are unallocated in the city budget (per the independent auditor)
⦁ City where elected officials' businesses are not profiting off city projects
⦁ City where serving as Mayor or Council does not get you a job with the city for a minimum of 18 months after serving
⦁ Mayor that actually listens respectfully to ALL opinions of the residents of Canton
It's time to elect a change. Every position that is up for re-election needs to replaced with new people, new ideas. Talk to the candidates. Find out if they are servant leaders or out for themselves.
I need your support, your vote.

Insight for the day.
CAVEAT - I realize this is NOT everyone but I do feel it’s the majority.
In my discussions with many people, liberal or conservative, I have found that we agree on so many issues fundamentally. Our challenges seem to be on how to bring about the resolution of the issues.
I believe the greater majority of Americans believe in:
Safety
Affordable healthcare (not what we have today)
Affordable College (not what we have today)
Affordable Housing (not what we have today)
Equality (regardless of s*x & race)
Prosperity
Self-governance (more at a local level, close to home)
Working for living
….
The resolutions to these problems are where our different viewpoints clash.
I want to emphasize that attacking one another, rudeness, anger and all the other negative feelings we hear so much about, do absolutely nothing to solve the problems. Only working together, incorporating our differing opinions into the resolutions, will we be successful.
I hope you all have a terrific weekend.
