DePaoli is currently under contract with the City of Boston to repair and refinish the 100+ year-old terrazzo in the lobby and corridors at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf, the first public school in the United States specifically geared toward educating deaf students. It's day, and here at DePaoli Mosaic, we LOVE terrazzo trivia, so here are a few random facts:

Many of America's most famous landmarks incorporate Terrazzo floors including the Statue of Liberty, Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Hoover Dam, Pearl Harbor, and Washington Monument.

Terrazzo floors can survive being completely submerged in water with only minor damage while most building finishes are completely destroyed. (Read about it here: https://ntma.com/stories-in-stone/how-terrazzo-weathers-a-hurricane/ )

August is National Inventors Month, so let's remember one of our favorites, Ercole Cavicchi, inventor of the Terrazzo grinding machine (information courtesy of the University of Central Florida). Ercole Cavicchi, was born in Bologna, Italy and immigrated to the United States in the 1880s.

During the first decade of the 20th century, Ercole Cavicchi moved his family to Massachusetts, where he proved a gifted inventor and entrepreneur. He started his own business, Cavicchi Polishing Machinery Corporation and found his American Dream.

Cavicchi Polishing Machine Co., based in Dorchester Massachusetts, “specialized in manufacturing machines for the surfacing and polishing of terrazzo, granite, marble, and other stone.” Between 1915 and 1932, Ercole Cavicchi patented at least three inventions related to his polishing machine business, the most recognizable being a mower-like machine designed to polish floors, pictured here. These inventions helped Cavicchi make a name for himself and his family, in their community, and in the Terrazzo trade.

The impact of these machines on the Terrazzo business that existed at the time (including polishing floors with a galera, a long handle attached to a carborundum stone) cannot be overstated.

In honor of World Photography Day tomorrow, here are two great shots we captured on a recent trip to Providence, RI.

The first is the lobby of the . We love how this shot highlights the interplay between the terrazzo pattern and the window mullions.

The second shows the shadow created by the decal of the restaurant's name on the front door reflected on the classically striped terrazzo floor.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Gava, our semi-retired Outside Superintendent. Jimmy was employed by DePaoli Mosaic Company for 40 years and left us the better for it. DePaoli would not be where we are today without Jim's knowledge and dedication, and his counsel will be sorely missed.

Jim's passing marks the end of an era at DePaoli. Jim took over as superintendent from another member of the Gava family, his uncle Mac Gava. This is the first time that DePaoli Mosaic been been without at least one member of the Gava family on the payroll since 1949.

The DePaoli Mosaic family is proud to announce our 3rd recipient (he's the tall one!) of an Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts (ASM) scholarship for post-secondary education! We think this is a pretty amazing feat given our size!

We recently had the chance to visit Bologna, Italy, a city famous for its 24 miles of wide, covered sidewalks called 'porticos.' But we weren't looking up... we were looking DOWN at the beautiful Venetian Terrazzo sidewalks that, despite the rain, provide a safe, durable, and beautiful walking surface.

A New York City woman's coffee table was discovered to be part of a dance floor from ancient Roman emperor Caligula's party yacht Since the discovery, the mosaic has been restored and returned to Nemi, Italy, where it is on display at the Museum of Roman Ships.
