Yesterday, we welcomed Very Reverend Dr. David M. Misbrener, D.Min, as the new Rector of the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, and Pastor of Saint Peter Church. He will be the Celebrant at all weekend Masses this weekend. Below is Biographical information on Father Misbrener! Be sure and greet Fr. Misbrener after Mass!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Household of God:
Dear Parishioners and Friend of St. John's and St. Peter's:

My name is Fr. David Michael Misbrener, and I am your new Rector/Pastor. I am happy to share a little information about myself. I was born in Akron, Ohio on April 12, 1966. My parents Martin and Elizabeth Misbrener still live in Akron, and I have a younger sister, Lisa, and a brother-in-law, Stefan. I'm a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School, LaRoche University, Pittsburgh, SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary, Pittsburgh, and I received my Master's Degree and Doctorate at St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland. My Doctorate work is "Breathing with Both Lungs-Working as a priest in the Roman Catholic and Byzantine Catholic Traditions." It is keeping with the spirituality of Pope St. John Paul II, as he stated many times that the Church needs to breathe with both lungs. My home parish is St. Francis de Sales, Portage Lakes, where we have had a plethora of vocations these past number of years, and Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, also in Akron, where I celebrated my first Divine Liturgy. I've been blessed to have known all of the pastors of St. Francis de Sales, only four in its 75 years history. I believe the continuity of the pastors helped in the formation of seminarians. I was always blessed to be surrounded by holy priests!

I was incardinated into the Diocese of Youngstown in 1999, and have served in parishes in Ravenna, Ohio, and Struthers, Ohio as an associate. As pastor I served in parishes in Andover and Kinsman, and was pastor of St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown, where we finished a new church/complex and paid the nearly two-million dollar structure off in 12 years. I served as pastor of St. Peter's for over 14 years. For the last three years I served as Pastor of St. Jude Church in Columbiana, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in East Palestine, Ohio.

Throughout my over 25 years of priesthood, I have worked in all of the counties of our Diocese, except Stark, so I am looking forward to getting to know all of you in Canton! I know the history of the two parishes, as my background of study is Church History. When the Rhoda Wise Cause was presented to Rome, I worked and wrote the Historical part of her case.

My parents are both in their 80s, and enjoy reasonably good health. I hope you will be able to meet them at parish functions in the future. I am bringing with me my eight-year old German-Shepherd/Mountain Cur dog with me, named Clyde. Throughout my priesthood, I have been blessed to have several rescue dogs with me. In many ways, they rescued me!

Arriving with me at St. John's and St. Peter's is a transitional deacon. His name is William Wainio. William is from Boardman, Ohio. William was ordained a deacon last June, and he is in his final year of study at St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland. I will have William submit a biography for all of you. William will begin preaching in a few weeks.
Since I am his "in house" supervisor, I was grateful that Bishop Bonnar let him move in with me in Canton, so I can help continue his formation.

Cardinal John Newman once wrote "To live is to change, and to have changed often." For some of us, change is difficult. We are comfortable with the priests we get to know, trust, and love. Father Sheridan is a good priest-friend of mine. He has been for many years. The door is always open to him at our parishes. I will look to him for his support and counsel as I get moved in. The vacancy in Massillon precipitated some changes in clergy. I am grateful to our bishop for assigning to your wonderful parishes. Please be patient with me. I'm sure I will consider Canton my home. For many years, I enjoyed priestly ministry in Portage County, so I'm sure I will enjoy my time with you in Canton.

I am well aware of the fine liturgical traditions both parishes enjoy, especially with music and choral singing. I love to sing, and I love the traditions of our Church. I hope we can all work together to preserve all of it, while moving forward. Covid changed so many things. It was a horrible experience for me to have to move during the height of the Covid epidemic a few years ago. I know that many of you drive into these churches, and so many of you have long family ties to the parishes. This is very important for the future of the parishes.

I will be celebrating my first Masses with you this weekend of September 2-3rd. We are having our Priest Convocation at Oglebay Lodge in West Virginia the following couple of days afterward, beginning on Labor Day. I will return to the parish Friday, September 8th. I do enjoy writing a weekly column for the bulletin. Over the years I've called this column "Household of God." Usually I write about the saints, the Fathers of the Church, especially the Desert Fathers and Mothers, something historical, or the readings/gospel of the week. Over the years I've enjoyed writing, and sadly have gotten out of the practice a bit. I hope to revive the practice with all of you.

Make it a good week,
Father David, Priest & Sinner

Happy Anniversary Father Sheridan!

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us our holy priest, Father Sheridan, who brings us many blessings by serving us with your Holy Sacrament of redemption. His hands bring us Your saving grace in the most Holy Eucharist. His prayers bring us Your mercy in forgiving our sins and bringing us salvation to receive the Kingdom of God. We pray that he will live a long life full of your blessings and good health. We also pray that when the time comes for his death, which is our final destination according to Your will, he will be ushered into Your Kingdom in Heaven, where he will spend his eternal life full of unending joy. Lord Jesus, we pray that Father Sheridan will receive protection from all physical, emotional, and spiritual attacks. We pray that he will be covered by the blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to be his guide. Let him continue serving Your people and the church, and let his faith in You endure until the end. Bless and multiply his ministry for the church to also multiply and glorify Your Holy name. We ask this in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Yesterday was a busy day! M.L. Schultze put together a Downtown Canton Church Tour! For those of us who lead worship in some way, it was a very long - but successful day! Organ music was heard in all but one church (four of the churches house organs that Charles E. Kegg has either rebuilt or built brand new)! At Shiloh Missionary Baptist - "Sister Brynda" (who previously served that church for 40 years as organist) rendered, without reproach, on the Hammond B-3, skillfully accompanying Reverend Prince as he sang an old gospel hymn. It was fantastic!!

Many thanks to the following:
