Please help us help this amazing family!
Despite having already raised their now-adult children, nine years ago Lori and Marv Penrod became the caretakers and legal guardians of Marissa “Rissy” Anderegg, who was born in 2003 with the brain injury hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), resulting in paralysis and epilepsy. Lori and her daughter were visiting nurses to Rissy, and when Rissy’s aunt, with whom she lived, unexpectedly died, Lori and Marv took Rissy in as their own child. Because Rissy loves the outdoors, the Penrods take her to their campsite on Leesville Lake when they can. However, getting her out and taking her to appointments is difficult—currently they have to physically lift her in and out of their vehicle, which has taken a toll as both Rissy and her adoptive parents have aged. The Penrods desperately need a wheelchair-friendly van to transport Rissy. Through Betterment Bash 2023, the Canton Chapter of the Foundation for Community Betterment hopes to raise enough money to provide them either with their own van or with the ability to rent a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to make the lives of this loving family easier.

Alexandria Bay is one of of our other Betterment chapters. Each year they host a “Paddle” event on the bay to raise money for people in their community. In honor of National Multiple Sclerosis month, we celebrate the chapter’s support of John Slate, who was diagnosed with MS in 2012. The Alex Bay chapter was able to build John a wheelchair ramp and make modifications to his home to accommodate his needs.
In honor of National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness month, Betterment would like to highlight John Slate, a former fishing guide in Alexandria Bay, who was diagnosed in 2012 with an aggressive form of MS that had confined him to a wheel chair. Betterment was able to provide funds and manpower to build John a wheelchair ramp and make modifications to his house to accommodate the wheelchair. Fast forward to today and Lisa and Gaby Slate have been instrumental in the Alexandria Bay Paddle, running registration over the past few years.
