When Thomas Edison and Henry Ford traveled to Florida, they visited many cities including Clewiston, where they inspected local plants and conducted research. They were welcomed by B.C. Dahlberg, president of the Southern Sugar Company and a group of local officials. Afterwards, they went to the home of F.L. Williamson for lunch. The men spent time watching cane sugar be processed into raw, brown sugar that could be used for a variety of purposes, and both men were interested in learning about this fascinating new industry.

The world-famous inventor compared the work of the sugar mills in extracting sugar to generating latex from plants to produce rubber. While the group was having lunch, Edison walked around and broke pieces of small bushes that he squeezed and examined, hoping to find one that contained rubber. At one point in his life, Edison typically stuck to a diet of milk and ci**rs, and consumed a glass of milk before returning to the rest of the group.

Henry Ford was impressed with the machinery and spent time with P.G. Bishop, the operating Vice president learning about the operation and what the role of all the equipment was. After their visit, Ford and Edison returned to Fort Myers with several new samples of sugar.

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are a great place to visit here in SW Florida.

In February of 1929, Harvey S. Firestone, accompanied by Mrs. Firestone, traveled across the Tamiami Trail to Fort Myers to attend Edison's birthday celebration. Firestone had recently opened a new office building at Miami Beach and similar to Mr. Edison, makes Florida a place to work and play. All the executives of the company travel to the office at some time during the winter. In the northwest corner, there are large offices where Harvey Firestone, jr, president and manager of the Liberian plantation division, and Russell Firestone, manager of the Firestone master service stations, worked for a period of time . Across the hall in the northeast corner, there is an office for visiting executives. Firestone also built a schoolroom that included desks, blackboard, and bookcases that were used by the three younger Firestone children who are preparing for college. Harvey S. Firestone ensures that the young boys are in excellent physical condition and his motto is "train the mind to rest and relax to take care of the body."

When visiting with Mr. Edison, Firestone planed to tell Mr. Edison about plants that they are growing in the gardens at the Fireston me farm. Firestone aided the rubber research project by growing plants in another section of Florida besides Fort Myers. The tire manufacturer was feeling very optimistic about the project, stating "Mr. Edison is going to get something worthwhile out of his experiments." While running his own business and supporting Edison's research efforts, Firestone found time to be active in Miami Beach sports and civic affairs.
