AN UPDATE ON THE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CRUISING AREA
I wanted to provide you with an update on the current status of the Southwest Florida cruising area with the recent Hurricane Helene episode. Our area experienced heavy rains, storm surges that led to flooding and the amassing of debris, but it was not as bad as that of areas up the coast of Florida into other states in the Southeast as far as the Carolinas. We are open and operational!
Yes, some the communities along the Gulf in our area saw results similar to that of Hurricane Ian, but for the most part we did not receive the “hits” that struck the St. Pete and Tampa Bay area and on up the coast. Those areas experienced record-setting water levels and storm surges described as being “unbelievable” by countless longtime residents. Sadly, the death count keeps rising along the route of Helene, as well.
We were very fortunate at Southwest Florida Yachts as we continue on our path of recovery from the extensive damage and losses we experienced as the result of Hurricane Ian. We had some rain and surging from Helene, but nothing that caused damage or concern. Coincidentally, just a few days before Helene “visited” us we completed the installation of a new floor in our retail store, The Yacht Chandler Nautical Boutique. That floor had been damaged by flood waters from Hurricane Ian and had to be replaced. In anticipation of that recovery step we had replaced nearly all of the merchandise. Thankfully, that step forward was not blocked by Helene.
Our road to recovery from Hurricane Ian just passed its second year. We have been back in operation since the beginning of the year and continue to move forward. We recently added a Leopard 43 Power Cat to our charter fleet, “Tom Cat”, and we will soon be adding two sailboats as we strive to increase our fleet with both power and sail cruisers. As many of you know, our “Berth Day” is fast-approaching. That is the commemoration of our 40th anniversary. In that regard, we are offering one, free day with any charter of three days or longer through December 31 of next year as our way of celebrating and expressing our gratitude to our “family” of cruisers.

We arr still closed. Our office had to be torn up with floors and drywall replaced due to water intrusion. Therefore our phones and computers are still down. We hope to be back up and running within then next two weeks.

We want to thank you all for the hundreds of texts, emails and social media posts we have received over the last 10 days- two weeks since Hurricane Ian changed our lives. Many of you have been part of our lives for decades, some we may have recently met, and some we have yet to meet. You are our customers, business associates, neighbors and friends. Southwest Florida Yachts received a devastating blow from Hurricane Ian. On September 28, 2022, all of our lives changed. We are now trying to pick up the pieces and rebuild. We are committed to coming back stronger than ever!
As you know, insurance takes time and usually is never adequate to cover all of the losses one sustains in a disaster of this magnitude. We are working hard to keep our staff employed for as long as we can until Southwest Florida emerges from this tragedy. You have all been with us for nearly four decades, and we ask for your support at this difficult time. All funds will be used to rebuild SFY and keep our staff employed. Tarpon Point Marina, where we are located, is projecting 6-12 months to rebuild and reopen the marina. We will be working with them to reopen as soon as possible.
We know the road ahead will be challenging, but we are committed to celebrating our 40th Anniversary with all of you in 2024!

First of all, we and our staff are all safe so that is a positive. Thank God for that.
We lost everything in our home and our cars. For now, my family is based in Tampa so at least we have power and internet and can work from here to communicate to everyone.
I just ask for everyone’s patience, understanding and prayers as we work through this time. We know that some of you have already paid deposits on upcoming charters & classes. We will of course honor those. Please do not call your credit card company as that will only complicate what we have to do. Right now we don't even have mail boxes for regular mail. Nor can I even get to our office. Even if we get to the office we have no power, water, phones or internet there. I do know that the office is fine and all of our records are in tact. For now, if you had made a reservation for October, November or December we would ask that you put those plans on hold. We will be in touch with each of you in time.
We will have to reschedule many, many charters and classes until next year or beyond, whenever it's convenient for you, our customers. We are positive that we will get through this with everyone’s support.
So many people have already texted and emailed asking how they can help us. I don't know right now, but as things become more clear I will let you know.
