Dear brothers,
We know that you may be experiencing increased anxiety and fear during this challenging time in our world with heightened antisemitism and harassment on campus in response to the current situation in Israel. We are working to ensure that our brothers feel safe on their campuses and to shut down antisemitism. In his 1914 book Zionism, ZBT's source of inspiration Professor Richard J.H. Gottheil wrote that he foresaw "modern" conditions in the diaspora from the Jewish homeland would continue to increase disfavorably to the Jewish people. This was 16 years after he founded the Zionist student organization that would become ZBT Fraternity, 34 years before the current state of Israel was founded and 110 years before this week's horrific terrorist attacks.
What would Dr. Gottheil have said about the terrorist attacks and war, and the violence against Israel in the years since?
Today is Professor Gottheil's 161st birthday (October 13, 1862 – May 22, 1936).
9 years ago today, ZBT issued a statement denouncing terrorist attacks in Israel. 6 days ago, same. Yesterday, dozens of U.S. college campuses saw anti-Israel protests.
We will never know exactly what Professor Gottheil would have said, but ZBT does believe that 125 years after he founded that original student group, Zion B’Mishpat T’padeh ("Zion shall be redeemed with justice"), he would be proud of the ways today's students support Zionism, love Israel and fight against antisemitism and hate culture.
In the 1914 book, he also said that by coming together, the Jewish people "will draw, each in his own measure, that sufficiency of moral and religious strength that will better enable them to resist the encroachments of their surroundings." We must stand together against hate.
Happy birthday, Professor Gottheil. ZBT is grateful for your forethought, insight and leadership.
