Store guests often make our day. A comment this morning was especially kind. The man had limited English and wanted to explain to a woman who did not speak English what was special about an artist's work earning the Indiana Artisan designation. He described them as "the masterpieces of Indiana artists."

With a business name like Glazed and Confused Creations, you know ceramic jewelry artist Deanna Poelsma carves a lot of personality into her artful designs. Meet her and watch her create in our store during the Carmel International Arts Festival. She will set up her workbench from 10-5 Sunday, Sept. 29. We are just north of Main Street at 22 N. Rangeline Road.
Mixed media artist Wendy Simon turned the tables (or should we say workbench?) yesterday at the Friends of Indiana Artisan event in her Perhaps & Polkadots studio. Following a fascinating talk about the nittygritty of her creative process to make whimsical animals, Wendy armed her guests with the supplies they needed to sculpt a head of their own. (Those dots on the notebook pad at the bottom of the photo are realistic quarter-inch eyeballs she made in resin.) Experiencing an Artisan's life in their studio is a hallmark of the Friends program.
In 2010, the state legislature decided to identify and recognize the best art, food and beverage that Hoosiers make by designating it Indiana Artisan. Knowledgeable, highly qualified individuals are selected each year to conduct a rigorous evaluation of work submitted. Congratulations and welcome to this year’s newest creatives to be honored: ceramicists Cathy Cozart and Suzanne Mauro; wood artists Otto Folkerts and Tim Passmore; and milliner Dana Rohde.

We're tipping our hat on National Nonprofit Day to everyone who supports Indiana Artisan. While major funders -- the Indiana Arts Commission, the city of Carmel and the National Endowment of the Arts -- give wings to our mission, our store customers, social media fans, Marketplace and Holiday Marketplace guests, Friends of Indiana Artisan, and individual donors keep us flying day in and day out. Thank you!
We love art that is graceful, colorful and functional, so our hearts skip several beats over Lisa Pelo's blown-glass dispensers. Our good neighbors at The Olive Mill are giving 20% off oil or vinegar this month when you buy a dispenser from Indiana Artisan in the Carmel Arts & Design District.
Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery is helping Carmel PorchFest collect nonperishable food that Merciful HELP Center will use to stock shelves for disadvantaged residents of Central Indiana and Hamilton County. Collection bins will be set up at Late Night on Main (7 p.m.-midnight this Saturday, Aug. 17). Indiana Artisan will accept items all this week. Donors of at least four items at our store can enter to win a two-person, one-year membership in Friends of Indiana Artisan. Carmel Arts & Design District
Because Aug. 8 is International Cat Day, it seems only right to share work from Cat People Press today. Rebecca Stockert is the creative genius behind the watercolors or ink paintings that become a print or card to celebrate our complicated relationships with felines. Her pieces express life with cats: funny, cute, and furry, with the occasional appearance of claws or teeth and a mix of comedy, dark humor, and absolute adorableness. Cat People Press delivers correspondence perfect for cat lovers. Available in both Indiana Artisan stores.

Join us for a dreamy evening with Deanna Poelsma, a ceramic jewelry artist whose stylized vision evokes a retro aesthetic inspired by both the geometric patterns of Art Deco and the graceful curves of Art Nouveau botanicals. You will spend two captivating hours with Deanna as she demonstrates her distinctive process of crafting handmade stoneware earrings and pendants.
Discover the meticulous methods she uses, from shaping the clay to adding the final touches of color that render her one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art. Deanna will share the insights behind her designs and offer a behind-the-scenes look at her artistic journey. Prepare to get your hands a bit messy as you explore some of her techniques while putting the finishing touches on a small piece of jewelry. Afterwards, savor delightful Indiana Artisan refreshments and don’t miss the chance to purchase Deanna’s stunning jewelry.

Jim Brune dabbled with painting in high school, learned how to paint with watercolors in college, and tried his hand a few years ago at watercolor painting on hardwood — a unique method that sets his work apart from traditional watercolor artists. “I don’t know of anybody who does art the way I do,” Jim says of his watercolor-on-wood creations. “My art will never be duplicated by anyone, including myself.” Using a realism technique that makes his artwork seem right at home in any family room, the Decatur artist carefully chooses what kind of wood to paint on from unused pieces of hardwood at his sawmill. July is Worldwide Watercolor Month. Celebrate it by getting to know Jim’s work.

“Taking a brush loaded with color and touching it to a surface that explodes, intermingles and changes before you, that’s inspiring,” says Rena Brouwer of Delphi. “The fluid’s creative effects stretch my imagination.” Her work is Indiana-inspired because she paints what she knows and experiences. July is Worldwide Watercolor Month. Rena is another Indiana Artisan whose work will amaze you.
