“Oh, stop. You are not fat! You are looking so much healthier!”
That seems harmless, right? After all, you are trying to make someone feel better about their appearance, right? Sure. We hear you and your positive intentions, but we want to let you know why this may not be the best thing to say and alternatives.
This statement insinuates a few things:
The word "healthy" is inherently emotional for many. Regardless of how you mean it, the eating disorder is not going to hear it that way.
Trying to convince someone they are not fat implies being fat is bad. ❌
Maybe try these things instead:
“You seem happier lately!” 😊
“It’s nice to see you doing things you enjoy.” 🎨✨
“You have been smiling more lately.” 😄
Words matter.

Inner child healing is not just a “trendy topic” that is all over your social media nowadays. It is truly so valuable in healing. 🌟💖
We are so sorry you have to heal the things that you did not choose, but we are so proud of you for choosing to do so.
Your journey towards healing is brave and important. Keep going, one step at a time. You’ve got this!
What would change if you lived by these statements? 🤔
Just hear us out.
Health at Every Size provides hope, realistic living, and freedom. Rather than focusing on weight loss and fighting against the body, HAES provides space for weight inclusivity, respectful care, and life-enhancing movement. 🌟💖🏃♀️
Let’s be clear here: Health at Every Size does NOT say that every person, every size, and in every body is healthy. Rather, it states that the size of a person’s body cannot determine their health status.
Health goals do not have to include weight loss.
Bad body image days happen. Even if someone does not experience an eating disorder, there are still days that feel uncomfortable in the body. It is part of being a human.
However, for someone with an eating disorder, the fleeting thought is not fleeting. It often sticks around, prevents someone from doing what they want to do, or causes increased negative emotions.
We are not asking you to go from hating your body to loving your body. We are introducing body neutrality as a way to show respect to your body despite what it looks like. That can be so hard.
“But I don’t believe those things about me. Other people, maybe, but not me.”
Okay, let’s go with that.
What if you spoke to yourself like you would a loved one? What would a loved one say to you if they knew what you are thinking about your body? Can you ask for support? 💕
One day at a time, y'all. Deep breath. You got this! 🌟
“If you just increase your protein intake…” Ummm…not necessarily. 🫣
Everybody is different, so please chat with your team about this. However, we can confidentially say that the body needs a variety of nourishment, including protein, but not all protein.
So, we invite you to consider that protein is not a magical fix and check out why we think so...
Movement is not bad. Let’s say that again…movement is not bad. 😊
BUT, the eating disorder often takes movement and places rules, expectations, and rigidity on it. This often includes numbers about units of energy, days of the week, or minutes in an hour. We just want you to know that it does not have to be that way.
Slide to see what to things to consider when engaging in movement.
And no, movement is not inherently bad. The body was created to be moved. However! The body was not created to follow a militant regimen.
Talk to your treatment team about this - we want to help! 💛
Yeah…let’s just not, okay? 👌
Posting videos or photos of what you eat in a day fuels comparison and ignores body cues, and it is inherently rooted in privilege. Want to know more? Keep reading!
Comparison. Comparison. Comparison. This often leaves you with negative emotions about yourself. It leads to feeling as if you are doing something wrong, increased anxiety about your own food choices, and associates different choices with guilt. Comparison. Just not helpful.
Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. These videos encourage you to ignore the body’s cues. Hunger changes every single day and every single time for yourself. Hunger is not going to be the same as someone else’s. Your body cues are uniquely yours. Let’s not adopt something we see in a video because that is what we think our hunger or fullness “should” be. Honor those cues, friends.
Privilege. Privilege. Privilege. Let’s be real here: the foods you often see in these videos are rooted in privilege. These are often diets that are unattainable and unfeasible in terms of access and finances. It really is not a realistic way of life to squeeze your own juice every morning or buy all of XYZ supplements.
So go eat your things. Do your thing. No need to post about it. 😊
“Well, that is just how it is and how it has always been.” 🥴
Has anyone said something like this before? Or maybe you are not even aware of some of these things because there has not been a reason to question them. We want to let you know that if you believe something that feels hurtful or limiting, maybe you should consider being curious about that belief.
Eating disorders thrive on ingrained and false beliefs. We, as your treatment team, are here to support you in challenging those beliefs. So, here are some reminders for you today:
Self-worth does not depend on productivity.
You are not responsible for how others respond to your boundaries.
If using your voice causes conflict, that does not mean you should not use your voice. 🤍

Whatever your story is…we see you today🤍
A word from our founder, Renee Tilt RD🤍
“May is Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to prioritizing our well-being and promoting open conversations about mental health. I have been inspired by others who have openly shared their mental health struggles, and I see our clients at RoundTable Wellness facing their struggles every day. You all inspire me every day!
I guess that means it’s my turn. I will keep it short. I was first diagnosed with complex PTSD and Depression when I was in my early 30s after struggling with post-partum depression and relationship issues. I started to understand my deep feelings of rejection and “never good enough”. After years and years of hard work in therapy and an Intensive Outpatient Program and LOTS of ups and downs, I can confidently say now almost 2 decades later that I AM enough and I DO have value. I achieved this because I was willing to talk about it and share it with others (safe others). What has happened to me does not have the power it once used to. Does it still hurt? Yes. Does it still control me? Well, mostly no. Am I perfect? No. Do I have to be perfect? Nope! Am I still on this journey? Yes. I am truly grateful for all my friends, colleagues, and family who have supported me. I’ll close it out with one of my favorite Brene Brown quotes: ‘Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.’”
Nah. Your organs can do their job.
Your body cleanses itself naturally. Period. The kidneys, liver, lymph nodes, digestive tract, skin (yes, skin expels sweat!), and lungs all do their jobs. It’s really not necessary to “reset,” anything. It can actually cause more harm than good for the body.
Want to know more about this? Ask one of our dietitians and they can tell you allll the science things!
You have so many other valuable things to do than to be drinking juice, thinking about wanting to eat, and hoping your body will be, “cleansed.”
Go do other things.
We are so excited to collaborate with some wonderful teams in the mental health/eating disorder treatment space to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month!
Come join us at the Carmel location for some connection, joyful movement, therapy dogs and smoothies - could it get better than that? We think not. Hope to see you there✨
Someone in your life has likely commented on how warm and great the recent sunshine has been this week. We agree, love that sunshine ☀️
However, does that trigger body thoughts? You might think:
‼️I can’t wear that sweater to cover up my arms anymore.
‼️I really don’t want to try on my shorts because they might not fit.
‼️Am I going to be able to fit into that piece of clothing I kept from last year?
That👏🏻Is👏🏻Hard👏🏻
✨We wanted to leave you with some truths about clothing as the sun gets warmer. As always, take what is helpful and leave what is not for your place in recovery right now. Know you are doing hard things and you can enjoy the sun too!
I recently said to a client, “Recovery does not have a bright flashing arrow over the top of your head, it’s more of the small mundane moments that recovery happens.”
Check out how recovery happens in the mundane.
Recovery is one of the bravest things you will ever do - proud of you!

There are so many other fun things to talk about than someone’s appearance. Please just don’t comment on appearance.
Someone with an eating disorder is likely not going to hear what you actually means. Yes, we know you likely do not mean it this way and you might be trying to offer advice to help. However, eating disorders are pros at twisting the words of loved ones. Please be mindful.
While everyone’s experience with an eating disorder is unique and these may not apply, can we just agree to talk about funny cat videos, your favorite book, or your sports team instead of appearance?
Deal?
Deal!
Hey, you don’t need to shrink your body.
No. No buts. Period.
You were not created to spend your life dedicated to trying to take up less space.
✨No, you are not too much.
✨No, you are not the exception.
✨It might be super hard to believe this right now, but we promise the world wants to know the you that is nourished, respects your body, and takes up space.
So yeah, go take up space.
You do not need to shrink your body.
Your weekly dose of provider sayings we have heard around the office lately.
✨Diet culture is the worst.
✨Food freedom is possible.
✨Eating disorders are not meant to give you advice.
This work is hard and sometimes you need some reminders🤍
