Joseph Maratt, MD
Orthopaedic surgeon specialized in hip & knee replacement at Forté Sports Medicine & Orthopedics
If you're experiencing knee arthritis pain which hasn't been help with non-operative treatments, you may be considering knee replacement surgery. Dr. Joseph Maratt shares insight on what to expect with knee replacement surgery and recovery. Don't worry, you will be able to return to the pickleball court! https://bit.ly/4bcWYAy.
The key is doing everything we can to reduce pain and swelling in the first few weeks. If you can get good motion early on, the rest comes more easily.
For this reason I use:
- Subvastus approach (minimally invasive muscle sparing approach) which hurts less and allows for better motion and strength early on.
- No tourniquet to reduce thigh pain and swelling.
- Mako Robotics to personalize and ideally position the implants for each patient.
- Rapid recovery protocols with modern pain management techniques. When you’re up walking, doing PT and home the same or next day, you’re getting a head start on moving your knee and keeping it flexible.
If you’re considering knee replacement, make an appointment to learn more.
Total knee replacement is the most common joint replacement procedure performed today, with a large majority of patients reporting near or complete relief of their arthritic symptoms after recovering from surgery. We show patients their X-rays or other imaging during almost every visit. Digital images were a giant leap forward but the process of logging in, typing in a medical record number, and loading the right images for a patient during an appointment is cumbersome at best.
We built a system that ties together information from multiple medical records about the patient’s appointment, where they are in the office and what imaging they have had done to automatically preload the relevant imaging for the visit.
It makes the process of showing a patient their X-rays as simple as it was when it was film hanging on the lightbox. It makes the technology fade into the background. It feels a bit like magic.

We used to spend the summers in India when I was a kid. I remember the long flights and the times my brother and I would get to visit the pilots in the cockpit. As a child I admired them because they could fly an airplane. Now, I respect and admire them for the tremendous responsibility they bear each day they go to work. I enjoyed learning about Kirk and his career in aviation as we discussed the details of his surgery. To the inner child in me, it felt like getting a superhero back in the air.

To those who say, hip replacement is a solved problem… it’s not, and it should never be. Hip replacement is a great operation. But It can still be made better. It should be responsibly improved upon until the day hip replacement is no longer needed.
I use Stryker mako robotics in hip replacement because it allows for better planning, optimized placement of implants and precise assessment of the reconstruction.
It is incredible what the software and sensors allow us to see in real-time. In the context of the success of hip replacement, it’s an incremental step forward on a path to yet better. It’s a step worth taking.
p.s. I have always been in awe of the accomplishments of the era. I’ve wondered what it would have felt like to watch Neil Armstrong’s first step onto the surface of the moon live on TV. I’m looking forward to watching the launch tomorrow and all that follows.

The hip application was recently upgraded to version 4.1. I did my first 200 robotic hip replacements just about 7 years (and a few software versions) ago. Compared to the early upgrades, it was an incremental improvement in the software.
What I have come to appreciate about CT guided robotic surgery is the degree to which the reconstruction problem is solved prior to incision. Plan the case carefully on a 3D model, use the digitizer to mark an accurate neck cut, the haptic guidance in the robotic arm will help place the socket to match the plan, and you know exactly what you’re going to get before the case starts. It is a really predictable way to do surgery because it allows you to check each part of the procedure against a 3D plan as it is being performed.
