NATIONAL BARBECUE DAY | May 16
Each year on May 16 we celebrate National Barbecue Day in the United States. Whether you grill at home or grab some takeout, you will find Americans across the country enjoying an assortment of mouthwatering barbeque (BBQ) flavors and sauces.
In the world of barbecue, grillers decide how to cook their barbeque. Whether they choose charcoal, wood charcoal, wood, gas or slow cooking, they consider themselves the culinary expert of barbeque. Traditionally, Americans have four types of BBQ regions:
1.Kansas City - A variety of beef and pork cuts are slow cooked with a tomato and molasses-based sauce.
2.Carolina - Slow-roasted pork is cooked with a sauce with a vinegar and ketchup base combination.
3.Memphis - Dry rub pork is cooked low and slow absorbing the smokey, BBQ flavors.
4.Texas - Beef is slow-cooked in smoker grills and topped a with smoky, dry rub.
NATIONAL BARBECUE DAY HISTORY
Traditional barbeque methods involved digging a hole, placing meat over a pot and covering the hole with leaves. The meat was slow-cooked with the pot catching the juice from the meat, later to be used as a broth.
North Carolina
Today, American barbeque origins point to North Carolina as the oldest place barbeque is found. References to Barbecue can now be found in places across the country, but its "American" origins are in North Carolina. As barbecue spread across the country it changed in many ways. However, North Carolina BBQ has held true to its definition for generations. References to âa whole Hog barbecu'dâ date back to the 1700s, using pork as the original meat of choice because it was plenty and inexpensive. After the meat was cooked, it was often hung in a smokehouse for preservation for use in the coming days or weeks.

At Wilmingtonâs best in-home care, Caring Senior Service, we are proud to support our communityâs seniors and their families. Our professional in-home senior care services are here to make your lives easier.
*****Specialty Programs*****
Many of our senior clients live with health conditions that may require a different level of care from our staff. This is why we continually invest in higher-level training, as well as create specialized programs to meet these unique needs. You can count on us to support those with chronic diseases such as Alzheimerâs and other challenging conditions.
*****Our Team*****
Your Caring Team consists of quality caregivers, care managers, and an agency director. Caregivers are the backbone of Caring Senior Service. We only hire caregivers that display a true passion for serving others and who also have experience working with seniors. Our caregivers report to a Care manager whose job is to ensure that each client has the best caregiver based on skill, experience, and personality. Our care managers also make regular visits to a client's home to make sure that care plans remain up to date and that everyone is happy with care. Finally, the agency director ensures that each client receives GreatCareÂŽ. They manage the team to make sure clients get the best service day or night. The agency director has the important responsibility of making sure that the statement âWe provide GreatCareÂŽâ is not just what we say, itâs what we do.

Who loves BINGO? Who loves MUSIC? Who loves MUSIC BINGO?
Let's schedule an event for your group! We arrive with prizes, Bingo cards, daubers, the best playlist, loads of fun, and benefits for your seniors.
Do you know some of the benefits for Seniors playing Music Bingo?
1. It Improves Hand-Eye Coordination
Bingo is a surprisingly fast paced game. Players are competing against each other to fill their cards, so they need to record numbers as quickly as they can.
The fast-paced repetitive nature of bingo is powerful for improving hand-eye coordination. This can have many benefits, like reducing mobility issues and promoting energy.
2. It Promotes Brain Function
Despite being a simple game, bingo can be powerful for the seniorâs cognition and brain function.
This is partly because they have to stay alert and respond quickly. Doing so involves keeping their focus on the game and the caller. Thereâs often a degree of multitasking as well, as bingo is generally highly social, so players will be engaging with each other throughout the process.
3. It Can Improve Mood
Bingo is often incredibly fun. Players are talking and laughing with each other, often as theyâre trying to compete.
Many bingo callers play into this too, by using jokes or wordplay as they read out the numbers.
The social connection aspect helps with mood as well. In fact, being lonely and isolated can be very harmful, increasing the risk of many health problems.
In contrast, connecting with people regularly increases stress resilience, helping to make life more enjoyable and perhaps even decreasing pain.
4. Promotes Mental and Physical Health
Bingo can actually make people healthier.
This is partly because of the social connection, which helps people to do better and often takes their minds off their own challenges. The cognitive and hand-eye benefits may be relevant too.
Playing games like bingo during hospital stays may even help seniors to recover faster.
5. Most People Can Play
Another benefit of bingo is that itâs inclusive. The game is easy to pick up, doesnât require complicated tools, and is already very familiar.
We have teamed up with Gentiva Hospice (Robert Simmons) and CenterWell Home Health (Amie Gauthier) to bring you the greatest Music Bingo around!

NATIONAL BOMB POP DAY | LAST THURSDAY IN JUNE
The last Thursday in June is reserved for enjoying a summertime favorite on National Bomb Pop Day. Its rocket shape and vivid colors remind us of fireworks!
Patriotic and frozen into the shape of a star ready to rocket across the sky, the Bomb Pop came to fruition during the Cold War. Invented in 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri, Bomb Pops are also known as the red, white, and blue frozen treat. Having one of these icy sweets is a terrific way to kick off the upcoming 4th of July celebrations in your community.

PURPLE UP! DAY
During the Month of the Military Child, Purple Up! Day on April 15th recognizes some of the militaryâs most unsung heroes â their children. The day encourages everyone to wear purple representing all branches of the military and showing unity with each other.
All across the country and around the world, military children play a significant role in their schools, youth organizations, and communities. When we wear purple in their honor, we let them know we support them in all branches of the military â Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force. Whether they are a part of the military family for a short while or their entire childhood, the military child deserves to know they have the support of their community.
PURPLE UP! DAY HISTORY
The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Military Youth and Family Program initiated the Purple Up! for Military Kids in 2011. They selected April 15th during the Month of the Military Child as a way to honor military children from all branches of the military. Purple represented the colors of each branch of the military as one. Since then, other organizations and communities spread the word, giving the celebration momentum.
NATIONAL PET DAY
National Pet Day on April 11th dedicates the day to those pets who may not always get the companionship and attention pets deserve. While loving our pets is something we do every day, the observance encourages helping out orphaned pet companions. It will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.
Sometimes their human companions arenât well. Making sure their forever furry friends are receiving the best of care will help relieve stress and worry.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for The 2023 Cape Fear Purple Heart Dinner! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor please reach out to Crystal Ashley at 910-624-8664 or email her at [email protected].
Update!! If it is raining on Saturday, all Easter bonnet wearing participants may join us at Simply NC at 9:45 am to register for the Best Bonnet or Hat contest! We will have shopping discount coupons available for all participants and will parade along the sidewalk on Main Street if it is raining! Please help us support our small businesses by coming out rain or shine for the fun!
