The Oldest Masonic Lodge in the World

The oldest Masonic Lodge in the world (with verifiable lodge minutes) is the Lodge of Edinburgh No. 1, Edinburgh, Scotland...sometimes known as Mary's Chapel.

In July, 1949, it observed its 350th anniversary of its establishment. In 2008, (at the time of this writing), Lodge of Edinburgh No. 1 is 409 years old.

Oldest Masonic Lodge Minutes - July 31, 1599: Lodge of Edinburgh No. 1 has records to prove its long time existence as the Oldest Masonic Lodge.

First Operative to Speculative in Scotland - 1600: As early as 1600, The Lodge of Edinburgh began to admit non-operative Freemasons. In June, 1600, the Laird of Auchinleck was made a speculative member, the first authentic record of the making of such a member.

The famous Dr. Desaguliers visited the Lodge of Edinburgh on August 24, 1721. He had served as Grand Master of England and was referred to as "General Master Desaguliers". On the next day, while he was present, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Treasurer, the Deacon Convener of the Trades and the Clerk to the Dean of the Guild Court were admitted as members.

This date is thought to mark the change over from operative to speculative Freemasonry in Scotland.

Grandpa's Wooden Chest

I hated to hear the lawyer say
The things my grandpa gave away.
Like his old truck to Dad and Mom
And world war medals to Uncle John

My name was called
And something was said
About an old wooden box
Underneath his bed.

Just a worn out chest
With a rusty hinge
But I knew Grandpa kept
Something special within.

When I opened the lid
All I could see
Were some unused tools
And a letter to me.

A large fancy cloth
With two long strings
A small wooden hammer
Among other things

He wrote a man's job
Is to be a good husband father and a friend.
I built my life as best I could
By the tools laid here within.

He said the compasses remind me that life has boundaries
So live your life within
The square proves true and so should you
When dealing with all your friends.

Be an honorable man and walk uprightly
According to the plumb.
The level teaches us treat all men equal
Instead of only some.

And now it's your turn
To start your journey for knowledge, love and faith
So live your life by the Square and Compasses
And tools of your trade

Many years have passed by since I first opened
Grandpa's wooden chest
The tools he gave me, the words he wrote
The challenge to be my best.

Today I'll visit Grandpa
At the place where he was laid
To let him know he can be proud
I'm a Master of my trade.

On October 7, 2022 the Secretary of Cary¬Grove Lodge #1157 was honored by the Grand Master of Illinois. Leonard Huff was awarded “Patriot of the Year 2022”. Worshipful Brother Huff was Master of Cary-Grove Lodge #1157 for Masonic year of 2018.
Honored for his service to our Nation is our Patriot of the Year 2022. This Master Mason has served in the United States Army with distinction and pride 1985. Chief Warrant Office 2 Leonard J. Huff was raised a Master Mason in Cary-Grove Lodge No. 1157, Cary, IL. In February of 2013 and is affiliated with both Dundee Lodge No. 190 and Oneida Lodge No. 337. He currently serves as Secretary of Cary-Grove Lodge and as Senior Warden in Dundee Lodge.
Brother Leonard attended Eastern Illinois University where he joined ROTC and was commissioned in 1985 as a Second Lieutenant. He had various assignments in the Signal Corps. In 2007 he resigned his commission and accepted an appointment as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 is a wide range of duty stations. His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (3rd award), Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2nd award), Army Superior Unit Award, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (2nd award), Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device (3rd award) UN Medal, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger and Special Forces Tab.
CW2 Huff is married to Melinda Lynn Bailey. They have a daughter, Jessica, age 29, and a son, Nicholas, age 26.
