π Meet Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher Alora, a role model and hero! π
As a DC Army National Guard operations officer and UH-60 Black Hawk pilot, Alora inspires young adults to aim high, make plans, and explore all their options.
βJoining the U.S. Army in 2010 as an aircraft electrician, I was drawn to aviation, public service, and a college education β why not do all three?β says Alora.
From Fort Campbell, KY, to his hometown in California, and now with the D.C. National Guard, Aloraβs journey is a testament to resilience and dedication. As a first-generation Filipino American, his familyβs story of adaptation and contribution fuels his pride.
βIβm proud to show that someone like me can rise through the ranks as a U.S. Army aviator,β he shares.
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have a rich legacy of service dating back to the War of 1812. Aloraβs grandfather, a WWII POW in the Bataan Death March, is a poignant reminder of this heritage.
βHis courage inspired me to serve,β Alora reflects. βThere's more space for AAPI representation in the military, and despite challenges, we persevere.β
The DC National Guard thrives on diversity in race, religion, and sexual orientation. Lt. Col. Ryan Rooks emphasizes, βDiversity is our strength. It brings valuable perspectives and strengthens our organization.β
Letβs celebrate the contributions of AAPI heroes like Alora who continue to make a positive impact! πΊπΈπβ¨

π Inspiring Story of Valor and Resilience: The Heroic Journey of Army Capt. Jose Calugas π΅πποΈ
π Meet Army Capt. Jose Calugas, a remarkable man who demonstrated extraordinary bravery during World War II. Born in the Philippines in 1907, he wasn't a U.S. citizen but fought valiantly for America when the Japanese invaded his homeland.
πͺ Despite enduring unimaginable hardships, including nearly two years of captivity, Calugas earned the prestigious Medal of Honor. To receive this honor, he had to survive the brutal conditions of a prisoner of war camp and the infamous Bataan Death March.
πΎ Calugas, who hailed from a modest farming community, joined the Philippine Scouts of the U.S. Army in 1930. When the Japanese attacked the Philippines in 1942, he displayed incredible courage and leadership by fixing a damaged weapon during a fierce battle.
ποΈ Despite being taken captive, Calugas cunningly concealed news of his impending Medal of Honor recognition from his captors. He cleverly pretended to suffer from malaria to avoid suspicion and punishment.
π After enduring years of mistreatment, Calugas was released from prison and joined a guerrilla spy network, continuing his fight against the Japanese until the Allies liberated the Philippines in 1945.
ποΈ In 1945, he finally received the Medal of Honor, becoming the first Filipino to be awarded this esteemed honor. Calugas' legacy as a national hero lives on, with his Medal of Honor preserved at the Fort Sam Houston Museum and numerous tributes honoring his bravery.
π« Capt. Jose Calugas' inspiring story reminds us of the indomitable spirit and resilience that can be found in the face of adversity. His selfless acts of valor serve as a powerful example for young adults, encouraging them to embrace courage, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice.
