Building Bridges Between Home and School 02/14/2020

Koodoos to one of our SLP 2019 graduates, Dr. Charlotte Ashford, for her publication in Concordia's Perfecting the Practice Blog. We are so proud of her and look forward to seeing more of this in the future. Take a moment to see what Dr. A has to say and be inspired to your GREATNESS!!!

Building Bridges Between Home and School I expected parents to write answers that were math-related since I was a math teacher. However, parents wrote from their hearts, and with such complete transparency that it brought me to tears and gave me a glimpse of the struggles they faced.

Kicking off semester 2 on a high note! Our candidates are excited about their Cycle 3 results for the new state performance assessment, CalAPA, and gearing up for Cycles 1 and 2! They also engaged in rich discussions around equity, social justice, and critical pedagogy as they made connections with Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the 1963 Birmingham Children’s March, and our SLP framework. A beautiful day of learning and continuing their leadership journey! ✊🏼🙌🏼

School Discipline, Safety, and Climate: A Comprehensive Study in New York City 11/01/2019

"Our study of more than 800 New York City public middle and high schools, found that students suspended from school were more likely to incur consequences such as poor academic performance, dropout, and arrest. Suspensions were also disparately applied, influenced by factors such as race, disability, and economic status.

We also documented strategies that successful schools have adopted—such as restorative justice—that promote a positive school climate and reduce the use of suspension."
