Sensory Processing Disorder đŸš« equal Autism

It is a misconception that people with sensory integration differences must be Autistic. But according to Psychology Today, recent studies suggest that between 90% and 95% of people on the autism spectrum have sensory processing differences, but the reverse does not hold true.

It is critical to keep in mind an Autism diagnosis is complex and detailed. Reach out to a Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, or Developmental Pediatrician to discuss any questions you have for your child.

This is a golden bit of advice! Asking a child questions, especially a child that has difficulty understanding or expressing language, is not always helpful. It can add a lot of pressure and confusion! So how do we engage in conversation? Try these tips. . .

Did you know speech intelligibility improves the quickest between 2:6-3:5 years old?

Why is this important to know? This is great information to pass along to caregivers. We can also provide more intensive input during this time frame with children who present with speech sound disorders.

Note: Less intelligible children may experience this period later than more intelligible children.

Oftentimes the thing that ends up happening prior to the tantrum has nothing to do with why they are upset. It is oftentimes the final straw.

Reasons behind the tantrum can be tiredness, hunger, sickness or the beginnings of, worry, wanting connection, their shoes being too small, or a combination of them all. Ha!

Ask questions. Use your reasoning. Don’t assume. Give hugs. You (and your kid/s) are so loved.

Thanksgiving meals are lovely, but can be stressful for families with picky-eaters. Some encouragement for you today- your job is to provide the food, it’s the child’s job to decide what and how much they eat!
Avoid the power struggles over food today and let your family create positive and fun experiences with the meal!

Children can use patterns of errors, which can make it very dificult to understand their speech! These patterns can be typical during development, but as a child grows and matures, the errors should begin resolving. If a child uses many patterns for too long, it can negatively impact how well they can be understood as well as their reading abilities down the road.
Sweet Tea and Pigtails made this great visual to give you an idea of the errors kids can use and when they should fade!

Time to unpack speech sound errors that impact how well a person can be understood! First up- Articulation!
Think about how a young child sounds. You may quickly have examples come to mind of articulation errors. There are four types of errors that can be made, as seen by this great visual from Super Duper Publications.
If a child frequently has articulation errors, their speech can be VERY difficult to understand. A speech language pathologist can help figure out if these errors are appropriate for the child's age, or not!

Articulation errors are common in children when they first learn to speak. When a child demonstrates articulation errors beyond those of typical development, he/she may need to see a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Learn more about common articulation errors in our Handy Handouts at SuperDuperInc.com. http://ow.ly/1Mkw50CnfEQ

When a child is having trouble forming correct speech sounds, it can be extremely frustrating for them and their caregivers!
According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), speech sound disorders is an umbrella term referring to any difficulty .with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds.
This answer sounds complicated- because SPEECH production is very COMPLEX! The picture below shows the systems that are responsible for making speech sounds .
Stay tuned for information on each individual system!

Resharing this great guest post from Valli Gideons(Valli Gideons]).

As we continue to educate during Deaf Awareness month, we need to recognize the families of DHH individuals. Each family’s journey might be different. The end goal of having a child that can communicate os the same for all.

Read Valli’s thoughts below.

To the parent who’s child has been identified with hearing loss,

I want you to know that it’s going to be OK.
It will not be easy, there will be days you might feel overwhelmed with worry and decisions, but there will also be so much joy.

Your child does not need to be fixed. They are whole. What they need is support, acceptance, understanding, and love!

Believe in them. Wholeheartedly show them that the sky is the limit: hearing loss will not stop them from chasing their dreams.

Surround yourself with those who are champions for your child. Build a team of experts who put your child’s best interest first. Trust your instincts and advocate for the access your child deserves.

There is no one way to navigate hearing loss. Do your homework, be willing to adjust and course correct when needed. Ultimately, you know your child best. As they grow, LISTEN to them, and follow their lead. They are unique and what works for one child, may not be what’s best for the next.

This will not be an easy journey but it will be worth it! Your child will teach you more than you ever imagined.

You’ve got this!

Love,
Valli
