Why do you have low stomach hydrochloric acid (HCl) causing acid reflux and indigestion?

Common causes of low HCl include:

👉 Hypothyroidism
👉 H. Pylori infections
👉 Traumatic brain injury
👉 Gluten sensitivity
👉 Chronic gut inflammation
👉 Aging

While it’s common knowledge that an H. pylori infection is a common cause of acid reflux and stomach ulcers, what is lesser known is that low levels of HCl can lead to serious health issues if left unmanaged.

Sufficient HCl is necessary for the absorption of calcium and other essential minerals, so low levels can lead to a number of different deficiencies.

For example, iron and B12 deficiencies are very common in those with low HCl and a B12 deficiency specifically can lead to such health issues as depression, dementia, and even cardiovascular disease.

When you lack HCl, your stomach also can’t digest proteins as it should.

Because proteins aren’t being broken down, an over abundance of undigested food proteins in the small intestine can cause the gut’s immune system to become hyper reactive.

Over time this can lead to a loss of oral tolerance and increased food sensitivities.

This in turn results in a less diverse gut microbiome as you are unable to tolerate more and more kinds of food, which further worsens loss of oral tolerance in a vicious cycle.

You don’t have to have celiac disease for this to be the case as it also holds true for gluten sensitivity (when the immune system produces antibodies to gluten). Although celiac disease can also present solely as neurological symptoms.

Research shows that two thirds of people who produce antibodies to gluten manifest their symptoms neurologically. These individuals may not have any gastrointestinal complaints at all.

When either celiac disease or gluten sensitivity causes brain symptoms, a strict gluten-free diet can bring about a profound reversal of symptoms.

You may also need to remove dairy from the diet as it cross reacts with gluten, meaning the immune system mistakes dairy for gluten.

Please be wary of anyone who promises to cure your autoimmunity. This reveals a complete lack of understanding of autoimmune basics. Through diet and lifestyle management, autoimmunity can frequently be put into remission, but it cannot be cured. Most people will experience occasional flares during periods of stress or other immune triggers.
