Vernix caseosa, also known as vernix, is the waxy or cheese-like white substance found coating the skin of newborn human babies. It begins to form at about 27 weeks. It is produced by dedicated cells that play protective roles during fetal development and for a few hours after birth.

Don't wash it off!! Rub it in. It's the best lubricant for the baby's skin once the are 🌏 earthside🌎

This weekend a sweet baby boy was gently born into a room full of love and prayer, and it was the stuff of dreams ✨

This is so important! And for mamas having a cesarean you can still do this! There are ways to allow your cesarean to be family focused. You don’t have to lose your voice and your birth wishes!

⚡️This is what waiting 60 seconds to clamp the looks like. There’s still so much oxygen rich blood that was pumping from the placenta to the baby.

🔥 60 seconds is not true delayed cord clamping.

When there’s no medical necessity for separating baby from the placenta prior to the cord stopping it’s pulse, clamping should not occur before the cord turns white.

Almost every culture in the world has beliefs and rituals about birth. Whether it be about the baby, birth practice, ancestral support or superstitions about things. A lot of them also have beliefs that intertwine birth and death, reincarnation is one, but there are so many more.

As a midwife, I have heard many beliefs in the birth space and I’d love to share a few with you, some are also considered “women’s business” and are required to stay sacred and held close to those who have been gifted knowledge about them.

In the West African country of Togo, superstition dictated that labouring women should keep their noise to a minimum. Its believed that shouting and loud noises would attract evil spirits s women were encouraged to be as silent as possible.

Traditional Inuit culture would see a midwife figure be present at birth, they would facilitate a calm environment and whisper all their directions to labouring women.
In the Indian Provence of Bihar, if a woman wasn’t progressing in labour it was expected she drink a glass of water that her mother-in-law had dipped her toe in.

In some First Nation language groups in Australia, there is a belief that the placenta is the baby’s soul map which must be buried on country for them to receive ancestor guidance when they are older.

In healthcare settings, it can sometimes be challenging to have your cultural beliefs and rituals performed/ respected the way you want them to be. Incorporating these into a birth plan and talking to your providers is really important as you may be requesting something than needs planning behind it first.
