Neodymium may be the best-known rare earth magnet, but it is not the only one. Did you know Samarium Cobalt was developed as the first rare earth magnet in 1966? It shares many similarities to neodymium, including extreme strength in a small size. However, there are other characteristics which set it apart, including the wide temperature range under which it can be used.

Click the link below to learn more about samarium cobalt and its many uses in manufacturing.

How strong is your magnet? Pull force, also known as pull strength or max force, is a common expression used to describe the magnetic strength of magnets.

Magnets are tested then assigned a rating of pounds pull (or max force) to provide users with insight into the product’s strength and capability.

Does a magnet always hold the maximum number of pounds? No. What determines the strength of a magnet? Various circumstances and conditions may affect the strength and total weight a magnet holds.

These conditions include:
• Differing thicknesses of steel, particularly steel surfaces less than one-half inch thick
• Types of steel composition or the total amount of ferrous metal in an object
• Whether the magnet is placed in a horizontal or vertical position
• Coatings or layers on the surface area, including paint or grease
• Uneven surfaces, including rust

Neodymium often is called “the strongest magnetic material on Earth.”

Did you know that these magnets have optimal strength at cooler temperatures? While neo can retained its magnetism at temperatures up to 176’ F, it’s most powerful when the temperature drops.

When choosing the best magnet for your manufacturing application, it can be tempting to select the strongest magnet available. However, maximum strength may not be the best choice for your project. Magnetic grades are the maximum energy a magnet produces; usually the greater the grade, the stronger the magnet. Understanding magnet grades can help determine which magnet to use for your application.

Not sure what the difference between Grade 8 and Grade 30H is? Click the link below to see a full overview of magnetic grades and the impact they can have on your project design.

Happy Nobel Prize Day! On this day in 1902, Hendrik Antoon Lorentz and Pieter Zeeman were awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery and theoretical explanation of the Zeeman Effect.

Pieter Zeeman first observed that whenever a light source is placed in a magnetic field, then each of the lines of its emission spectrum are split into different component lines. The number of lines is determined by the strength of the magnetic field; a strong magnetic field yields three lines, while a weak magnetic field results in more than three component lines.

Modern era scientists apply the Zeeman Effect determine the energy levels of an atom. It also is used in astronomy to study the magnetic field of the sun and other stars. Some medical imaging techniques, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) also use the Zeeman Effect.

Congrats to this year’s winners and a special recognition to Zeeman and Lorentz for their contributions to the study of magnetism.
